ja1 1,166
Emerson has been average as opposed to Alonso being truly awful. Last night he wasn’t an issue, poor crossing but good energy levels and still found RLC, Higuain multiple times in the box. We attacked many times down our left with him. 6/10 performance. I think there’s a lot of negative hyperbole with him, I concede he’s not the answer as starting LB going forward but, for instance I think in his recent run in the team he’s done better than Azpilicueta. The only big disagreement is regarding azpi, who for me is still twice the player and was a lot better than Emerson against burnley. Emerson final ball wasn’t good and that’s what’s important at this level... anyone can run and be active. Our defense line conceded 2 goals from set pieces and Emerson was part of that defense line. Imagine what folks would say if it were alonso sitting on his ass for the second... alonso’s obvious (and perhaps only) virtue is set pieces. He also fares better against physical teams due to height and power. Emerson is easily outmuscled, and often is. At least that’s what I see.  Alonso’s lack of pace would not have been a problem either, against burnley, since we played in their half for most of the game. While both have been poor, they also have different characteristics and the manager should chose the one who fits the needs of the team in a game by game basis. Words like better liability, solid, are way too generic for me. Things are usually a bit more nuanced that that.

robsblubot 3,595
I thought he was great at United and was picked as motm by many. Now, he was terrible against warford. In attack, he was timid, slow, uncommitted, just passing the ball back even though he had lots of space. Rattled by the fans perhaps? in defense, wasn’t closing down on players quickly enough for me. he was contending with higuain as the worst player on the pitch, but then higuain scored, so alonso won. Vesper 30,185
I would rather have https://www.chelseafc.com/en/teams/women/magdalena-eriksson?pageTab=biography at LB than fucking Alonso   Eriksson arrived at Kingsmeadow following a four-year spell at Linkopings in her home country, where she captained the club to the league title in 2016 despite only being in her early twenties. She made her senior Sweden debut against France in 2014 and was part of the squad which reached the quarter-finals of the 2017 European Championship. Immediately looking at home from the moment she joined our growing Swedish contingent, Eriksson marked her Women’s Super League 1 debut with a powerful headed goal against Bristol City in a thumping 6-0 victory. Her set-pieces in the attacking third, often whipped in dangerously with her left foot, proved to be a regular source of goals throughout 2017/18, but her most telling contribution in the attacking third came when we faced Everton in mid-April, when an early goal settled a tense game which proved vital in bringing the WSL1 title back to the club. Eriksson also started the FA Cup final and both legs of our Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg, which helped take her tally to 31 appearances at the end of a successful first season in England, with Emma Hayes highlighting her as one of the unsung heroes of the squad.  Johnnyeye
