They pretty much shared minutes in PL. Alonso started first 4 of 6 games in PL under TT. And Alonso played in great wins against Everton and City (scored winner). Played 180mins against Atletico as well. We did not suffer defensively at all because of him. After Alonso scored winner against City he was benched last 3 PL games and we lost 2. I am sure TT analyzed all this during summer and maybe he found some other conclusions. For this formation and this specific role LWB I am not sure there is a better player in the world than MA!  Your preference for slow ass scrawny guys is hilarious. You really think Marcos Alonso is the best LWB for a 3-4-3? Really cracked me up Simon1991

Chilwell is miles better than Alonso at wingback and as a player overall. alonso just looks competent for this short purple patch of his and will return to being an absolutely shitty useless sloth sooner rather than later. Chilwell is our most complete wingback. Defensively aware and offensively more of constant threat than RJ without the amoung of defensive errors. I am pretty sure it is just fitness concerns that make him sit out not that he has been displaced by alonso. Also if Alonso was not the problem, he would not need an upgrade in the first place so your assessment is off a bit. Chilwell is better in some aspects and worse in others. We all agree that pace is pretty important for a lb as well as a wing back, and Alonso lacks there. On the other hand he's still a pretty skillful player who can definitely influence games when he's fit. And he's definitely fit right now, at least to my eyes. I don't really think he's just goals; think his passing, esp in tight spaces, is what makes him a good player. Chilwell will take over in time once he's fit and playing better than alonso in training, as it's supposed to be. Think Tuchel is always sending a message here, which is absolutely top management imo. Edited September 1, 2021 by robsblubot

Magic Lamps 11,692
I still think he is in general a garbage player but probably in the best form of his career. He turns 31 in 3 months tho and his lack of pace is killing a lot of our plays. he makes up for it with his direct goal threat but we would be better if he was just a tiny bit faster. Anyway, if Chilly really is not the solution than we have to buy anew. We will not win CL again with him starting throughout the campain. Alonso is fine vs meh teams like Spuds and Arse but he will struggle big time vs City, ManUre, PSg, Bayern like he did vs Liverpool Fernando

Milan 17,957
Well, there is a different reason why they boo him but I get his point, I also liked when the opposition booed us or the atmosphere was vile back in my playing days 😄

Alonso is fine vs meh teams like Spuds and Arse but he will struggle big time vs City, ManUre, PSg, Bayern like he did vs Liverpool I think he as been one of the best LB/LWB's in Europe so far in terms of actual great play the best I have seen so far this year are  no real order Alphonso Davies (still not at pre injury level yet) Andrew Robertson Theo Hernández (my number one want by far, for years now, he would be a monster in the Tuchel system)  Raphaël Guerreiro  Marcos Alonso Borna Sosa (assist machine) Vitaliy Mykolenko Douglas Santos (was very impressed with him against us) honourable mention Leonardo Spinazzola until he blew out his Achilles was playing to an insane level, damn shame he turns 29 in March, as he likely will not (if he ever does) return to his pre injury level until he is almost (or is) 30, I am 90% convinced he was coming here until the injury (my evidence is that Marina (of all people) was literally one of the first non Italians to wish him a speedy recovery, within hours (minutes?) of his injury being diagnosed as an Achilles rupture)  amazing turn around for Alonso from 9 months ago and I AM sorta worried about Chilwell do not understand why he is basically not playing at all, we cannot run Alonso into the ground DH1988

Vesper 30,181
Tuchel has run him into the ground. Chilwell needs to step up and deliver. Alonso can be effective at times, but never for long, long, game in, game out stretches. He burns out.
robsblubot 3,595
Guardiola blocked alonso to stop us, and since we got nothing else going on, it worked wonders. Not really surprising, given how well alonso has been playing lately. Folks here really don’t understand Alonso’s role it seems. honestly thought the discussion would’ve been around lukakus United performance, but I guess…silly me.

I sort of wish Tuchel had thrown a curveball and rolled with Chilwell, plus not used a 2 striker, 3 CMF set up.

Mostly agree, although I don't necessarily consider Alonso a weak link, especially since we play with 3 at the back. He's often someone who needs stopping, which is what Pep did. Though perhaps chilwell should've come on once it became evident alonso was controlled. Chilwell must not be training super well atm. I think the balance was off and I have my doubts that we can match them at all with a luxury player on the pitch (dedicated striker). Magic Lamps 11,692
Told you Alonso would be going to be a disaster like in most big matches. Quality oppositions will stop and exploit him more often than not . He becomes a liability only, instead of an attacking threat
