When he scored his superb penalty aswell he was thumping the badge on his chest. He was once an Arsenal fan but the high regard in which he's held and success he's enjoyed will leave him a Chelsea legend when he retires. Carragher was an Everton fan when a boy, Lampard a West Ham fan, etc. a lot of footballers change allegiances in their careers as they make a name for themselves at a club - Ashley to me is a converted Chelsea boy!

As a side note, his performances against Barcelona and Bayern confirmed when it comes to the big games there isn't a left back in the world thats a patch on him!

I think releasing Cole would be a big mistake, to me he has been the most consistent defender last season he just needs to be rested occasionally - so he doesn't burn out.

Let's be realistic, yes he's still the best LB in the world on his day and would be missed in big games but I can definitely see the upside if we do sell him. First he's not getting any younger, and at his position where pace and stamina are the main attributes, I can't see him delivering at top level more than two seasons more. Second, we already have a ready made replacement for him in Bertrand, and we can get a back up for him (or recall PVA) who is much younger and on at most a third of Cole's wage.

As for the contract talks, I'd like it if good old Ash retired at the club. He's been absolutely wonderful for us, simply exceptional, and he's a great professional. One of my favourites for sure.

Ferdinand clearly condoned an Arsenal fan racially abusing Cole for the whole world to see yet he is snubbing Cole's handshake? If that was the other way round could you imagine the public backlash on Cole? he wouldn't be able to leave his house.

However no matter what the public opinion is on Cole, he has conducted himself in all this with nothing but the utmost dignity and class. He deserves respect from everyone for the way he has handled himself.
