MetsajCFC 1,255
No way back after taking a swipe at Mourinho and Chelsea.Good player, but not great. Thanks for CL memoriesExactly, plus on top of that we've got Wallace and Ake who both can play that position. Cesar Azpilicueta is younger and better than Bertrand, he wouldn't have had a chance.Great bit of business. Tomo 21,751
I always have found it funny that Ivan gets (rightly) criticised for letting in too many crosses yet Bertrand who's even more guilty of it not a word Decent enough player who will have a decent enough career, but wasn't ever going to be more than a squad player here. The Skipper 20,609
Agree about Azpi..but Luis has been pretty average for 20 million...Luis was £16m.
ILoveLamp 270
£10m being quoted as the fee. Great bit of business for us if that's the case. All the best to him, good luck!

Cesar Azpilicueta is younger and better than Bertrand, he wouldn't have had a chance.Great bit of business.Wallace is a joke. If you stand when it comes to comical defending in the Eredivisie (there's a lot of comical defending going on in that league), you have problems. Don't count on him making it here. And Ake is not a fullback, I don't think he has a future there. Doubt he'll ever make it here at all.Anyway, the club would do well to invest in a young fullback. Marseille's Mendy is a great prospect. Like Zouma, already playing regular football at a very young age. Balanced player, contributing at both ends of the pitch. If Azpi finally moves to Rb again, Mendy could cover for Luis and eventually take over. We Hate Scouse and Reddish-Blue

CHOULO19 24,332
Did I hear right, 10M?Yeah, that was the fee agreed on from the summer. I honestly think Saints got the better of that deal.
We Hate Scouse 10,326
Yeah, that was the fee agreed on from the summer. I honestly think Saints got the better of that deal. I think if we sold him in the Summer most would've been happy with £10 million. It's only after a few decent performances that people feel different. I think it isn't bad for a player that cost us very little and would never have been a first team player. After all, there was talk of an £8m price tag for a move to Villa last winter and there is now one year less remaining on his contract. Given that Southampton knew we were willing to sell and that Ryan made it crystal clear he wanted to move, if we really got as much as £10m that's good work by the club. I honestly don't think Ryan has showed anything at Soton that we did not know he was capable of. The general consensus by Chelsea fans in the first few months of last season was that him and Azpi ought to be our starting fullbacks. It hasn't just been "a few decent performances", he's been a key player for them. He deserves the praise he is getting and more. The Skipper 20,609
£10m is a fair price, don't know, are people seriously expecting like £20m for a guy that clearly didn't want to stay here? Viper22, bababoom and killer1257

lionsden 4,689
When has a player's unhappiness ever stopped a club from keeping the player if they really wanted to. Rooney, benteke, khedira, thibo(he wasn't exactly enthusiastic about the idea of coming back to chelsea to play 2nd fiddle to cech, was he) and many more have all showed their unhappiness at current situation in varying ways, some even handling in a transfer request. Yet their clubs were still determined to keep them and so they did.The bottomline is, if a club really wants to keep a player, they will and they usually do. The whole "bertrand wanted to leave" is absolute bollocks.I respect those who admit that jose and the club just simply saw him as surplus to requirement and that's the real reason he was sold more than those using the former as a genuine excuse. killer1257, Fernando, Amblève. and 1 other

LDN Blue 7,903
We should have brought in back to fight it out with 29 yo Luis while Azpi returns to his natural position at right back.This. Precisely this.Filipe Luis is 29. Just 4 years younger than Ash when we deemed him surplus to requirements. Ryan is 25. There's no reason at all we couldn't let him develop at Southampton, which he's doing a fine job of it should be noted, then recall him to fight for the LB position with Luis. Considering the Brazilian is being used sporadically this season as well, Ryan could have easily fought his way in.It's another case of not trusting the lad. A lad who's got 154 loan appearances to his name by the way! zolayes

A lad who's got 154 loan appearances to his name by the way! Well considering hes nowhere near good enough to be first choice at Chelsea I am 110% behind and always have been behind the clubs decision to sign the best LB in Europe from last season despite him being 28 when we got him and loaning Ryan out and then selling him this window. If Bertrand could get into this Chelsea team ahead of Filipe Luis then I reckon I could get in ahead of Diego Costa. Whats the point in keeping a LB who isn't that great in comparison to what you've got when you have Ivanovic who is rarely injured or suspended and Luis who is rarely injured/suspended along with Azpi who can play both full back positions with incredible ease and good performances? Just a waste of a a squad place.
