CHOULO19 24,332
I said it when we de-facto sold Betrand last summer and I'll say it again now: Giving up on such a solid young LB that's been part of your own academy and has proven to be nothing short of reliable in every game he's played (except the Shaktar one, obviously) was a huge "fuck you" to our youth setup. I'm glad Bertrand has fucked Mourinho over.I'm very glad that Ryan has done so well. He's a great guy and top professional and deserves the best. I'm very happy for him. But I am NOT glad that the club made such a blunder and wasted such a top homegrown English talent. I don't see what that achieves exactly. zolayes

Bertrand and Azpilicueta are the same age, unless you are suggesting Mou choose the latter because he has an illogical hate for player's that came through academy. Tomo 21,751
No, Jose chose Azpi when Bertrand was clearly the most logical option because he had an illogical assessment of Bertrand's abilities which has proven to be wrong. Is he tho? Azpi has been nothing short of brilliant LB from a defensive point of view, and I think his supposed lack of attacking game is more down to instructions/team set up than anything else, he has actually had his moment's when he has ventured forward, prime example being his involvement in Diego Costa's winner at Anfield. In hindsight it would probably have been wiser to save the £16m and give Ryan the Felipe Luis role, but im yet to be convinced he is a better option than Azpi, also worth noting Ivanovic is slated a lot on here for letting crosses into the box but what went largely unnoticed is Bertrand was even more guilty of that.Having said that if we sign Cresswell in the summer then it would have been pointless selling Bertrand unless he really didn't want to be back up. OneMoSalah 8,886
He was sold because it was a good deal and the fact Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis are better players. If anybody is really disappointed we sold Bertrand to play Azpilicueta LB, when hes arguably the best defender in the league (Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville think he is the best)... then I am shell shocked in all honesty. Couldn't dave had been the best defensively player on the right side as well? And somewhat decent going forward..I would had prefer a dave and bertrand combo over ivan and dave combo anyday. zolayes
didierforever 7,349
as much as i love iva, even this transfer seems to have stemmed from iva "undroppable" status. if azpi had been given a real shot at RB, i have no doubt he would have replaced iva there and made way for bertrand to play more.by the way where is TOPTB. someone cancel his ban. apparently ryan was nothing more than a relegation to bottom table team player. some of the opinions on here are just too awesome to read. Duppy Conqueror 1,534
he handled starting in a European cup final. we should never have loaned him out after that. and I`m glad he`s doing good at Southampton but top teams often let good players leave.he wasn`t gonna beat out Dave and we have held back his career long enough. he earned the chance to start elsewhere and has proven himself good enough for England that he wouldn`t have got if he stayed. we messed him around long enough. he`s a solid player but I wouldn`t say he`s the most talented young player we have had in recent years or that him not making it with us means no young player will. midfielders have a better chance than defenders because Jose and other managers are more likely to rotate them and we have a few with bigger potential than Bertrand had. robsblubot 3,595
Not a fan to be honest - shows too much of the football most of the time which just isn't good enough at this level. Now he could be part of a group; he could certainly contribute as he has already. Was never a big fan of Luis signing and thought Ryan could provide adequate cover as (again) he already did.Not everyone has mikel's ambition or lack thereof, so best of luck to him. Soton is a good club and reckon the right place for a player of his skill.
