Well maybe meaningless is harsh but the stats completion you showed of Costa yesterday does not mean anything because I would expect that of our midfielders. Costa could have done better last night. Especially when he had the through ball to him and looked like he beat both Kiev defenders for pace. Just rather frustrated me. I want him to get back to his best and hope he can do it but tbh on his behalf, compared to last season the lack of clear created chance for him is not good enough.

those are meaningless stats.

falling deep and passing the ball back is a successful pass - but for what?

drifting on the wing despite us having proper width for once from azpi and baba- for what?

he won us corners when he could have tried to take a shot on goal, but he was busy trying to do his "fake" thing.

and then comes his positioning which was absolutely horrendous last night.

so meaningless stats pretty much sums it up.

do you not understand why strikers do that?

serious question have you ever played football before?

did you watch thw first half. We dominated. We put in a lot of balls in the box only for costa to be absent. He did not need to come deep.

Gp to the costa thread and for onve read and try to understand what so many people are saying about hos positioning instead of stayinf in your delusional world

After reading that article from WAGNH I can't take stats seriously anymore. Looking at ratings and stats is maybe not the last thing that should be brought up in a debate, but certainly not the first and shouldn't be the main point. This is in reference to Pacquiao and didi4ever argument, you guys like talking about numbers too much imo.

Thought he was fantastic again tbh. Looked like the Matic we know. Was a bulldozer. Made it looked easy the way he intercepted the ball at times.

he only made 1 interception, i wasnt impressed with him again, still way below his best

He lost the ball near the corner flag to Affelay once and apart from that I thought he was good. He controlled play, went forward well and don't actually remember him being exploited in the game.

Stoke sat back for most of the match, i didnt think Matic was bad but didnt think he was very good either

Much better but still not at his best.

Movement and passing up there to what he can do. Strength (tackling) and finishing - as pointed out above - still lacking.

Many players improved and are improving slowly from the torrid start of the season.

Once again, the evidence points to bad fitness levels as the most likely culprit.

Would love to play against him right now, so predictable in his movement and force him onto his right side and he's basically like a hedgehog on it's back

What I loved about him was his unique skillset. Tall, strong and left-footed (!), offering a great physical presence in midfield and decent technique, even capable of skipping past a player and carrying the ball forward. But 2015 has not been a good year, and that's putting it lightly.

He can recover from this but not in his current role imo. He's not a (lone) holding midfielder. Not at this level. He lacks the tactical intelligence of a shield and lacks the intelligence on the ball of a midfield general. He's better off in the Essien/Ballack role, with the tactical freedom as a box-to-box midfielder.

Tall, strong and left-footed (!)

Honestly, Matic is so incredibly one-footed that it's painful to watch. Everything he does is with his fucking left foot only. There have been so many times I wanted to shout 'USE YOUR RIGHT FOOT FOR FUCKING SAKE!!!'.
