Fernando Torres

Was poor today but it's only his first game. He will need to up his work rate and spirit. Was a bit subdued and too respectful. If it was any other team but Liverpool, Torres would have been in Agger's face about that elbow. He would told the referee off a few times too. His shooting has been subpar all season too. His standards are high so it's silly to pick on a player missing a few shots here and there but it just doesn't seem like he's striking the ball as well in front of goal this year.

Apparently Ancelotti said in an interview after the game that Torres and Luiz were the future of Chelsea. Besides being a post game platitude, do you think this is a hint that Ancelotti may drop Drogba soon? I fear Torres may not work well with another similar forward. He's better alone up front or at the very least the main man in the middle. Anything else and it's wasting him.

Will be interesting to see him play with Spain this week. Hopefully he'll slot a couple in and erase this game from his memory.

He's never been a major workhorse. You're not going to see him pressure pressure pressure. That's not usually his game. That's why Kuyt was good for him because he did a lot of the dirty work.

Yes he was too respectful. Normally that elbow would have pissed him off, he would have been raging at the ref. TBF Liverpool closed him down immediately but they weren't too dirty about it.

The game is over, he can now completely move on from Liverpool and look forward.

Yes, I know, but it wouldn't hurt to put in a little bit more. I don't want him to run around like a headless chicken or Steven Gerrard but he needs to offer himself more to give his teammates more options. It's not enough to just point to the goals, he has to help his teammates out. Especially as the team struggles to create.

Oh well, it's onto Anfield for next season then. And you know how well he does there :eyebrows:

I agree but I'm not even sure he knew where to offer himself to be honest. 3 days of practice with a new team with a manager trying to figure were to put him. I don't want to kiss the feet of Kenny but maybe he was right to keep the biter out of this game until he got his feet wet with the team more.

I can see him getting a lot of stick in the future.

Some football fans believe the game is about running around like headless chickens. Thus they are quick to resort to blaming commitment or determination once their team loses, instead of things that win you football matches at this level. Torres is a classy player and (unfortunately) they rarely waste their energy running around because they simply don't need to. He'll certainly get much flack for that in the future.

You heard over and over again in Liverpool about Torres' unwillingness to work. Strange, when he was banging the goals, you didn't hear too much about his work rate.

He was taught to play football in Spain. Unlike the English mentality, they don't rate you because you huff and puff a lot. No one's impressed with that. And who's to say they're wrong? As current world and euro champs, they have, collectively, the greatest generation of Spanish players.

Running like a headless chicken = work rate = effort = goals in the mind of many.

Typical Torres game against Aston Villa last season. Played 90+ minutes, wasn't a real threat, 90+ minute, Benny squeezes the ball into him, he runs onto it, clinical finish, win 1-0.

When will Benny be back?

Torres WILL score, and his goals will be sublime! Let's just hope he's left his recent attitude at Anfeild!

He played very little in Spains World Cup!......Bit of a worry actually! So many scousers claiming his past 12/18 months have been dire????????

He had an awful world cup because he had knee surgery in April and was playing Switzerland in June. Kaka had a similar knee surgery after the world cup and took 4 months to get back into the Real Madrid side. So do the math. Torres also had surgery on the same in January. He doesn't talk about it, but I bet part of the disillusionment with Liverpool was the way they handled his injuries which basically ruined his world cup on a personal level. I don't think he was ever fully fit last season but Liverpool's backup striker at the time was David Ngog. Benetiz preferred a less than 100% fit Torres. Ngog was starting when Hodgson was there but Dalglish has since dropped him.

And for all the talk about him not performing the last 18 months, his best season strike rate was in 2009/2010, 18 goals in 22 league games (20 starts). Would you take that kind of production from Torres right now? I would.

Scousers were complaining when he was out hurt and wanting to know when he'd be back. Don't remember hearing anybody saying "let's keep him out a little longer so he can actually get healthy". There was no long term vision. Knee surgery in Jan then again in April. Rumors that Torres was very unhappy with the way LFC handled his injuries with H&G wanting him back out ASAP. He kept playing until CL finish wasn't possible. Supposedly Rafa wanted to give him a little more time so he would be healthy for the WC once CL qualification was out.

The second half of last season was a disaster for LFC and all the players.
