Fernando Torres

Interesting read about Pepe Reina and his possible future. Posting it here because he talks about Torres move.

Reina and the Future

"So why is he still there? "That's the question. I imagine the fans will recognise my commitment, they will appreciate that. But those who say that Fernando is a mercenary or a money-grabber for going are wrong. Fernando gave them the opportunity in the summer by staying at the club and things haven't changed much."

"In fact, Reina, Torres and Gerrard – the club's three greatest assets – were told they could not leave at a time when the club were looking for a new buyer. Reina will not admit it and nor will he deny it. "The clauses in my contract are between me and the club," he says simply – but he secured a buy-out clause understood to be in the region of £20m. In the meantime, little changed to encourage him to stay. In fact, the handling of Torres's departure did the opposite. Loyalty cuts both ways."

"The offer for Torres came back again," Reina says simply. The offer for him did not. But it will. And then? Reina puffs out his cheeks. "I can't … I don't want to guess what the future holds."

Interesting read indeed. People choose to forget that Torres could have left Liverpool much, much earlier. He didn't, until it was clear he, and the club, wasn't going anywhere fast. He's too young and too talented to mire himself in mediocrity. But the truth is hard to swallow I suppose.

Guardian article

I'm surprised his family hasn't moved down yet, I thought they were in London already. Hopefully he settled quickly. No excuses for not scoring yet, but it's clear he's playing a very game and role at Chelsea to the one he played in Liverpool.

Not sure if the entire family is with him but Torres and his wife were watching the FA Cup game vs Everton with Yossi in the stands. That's what FSC showed.

Another article from Sid Lowe who is based in Spain and who did the Reina interview. The article is translated from Spanish to English. It loses a little context in the translation but you get the general idea. Sid intimates that Liverpool wanted to make Torres out to be the bad guy and succeeded.

Torres to Chelsea

Liverpool faithful are losing their mind:

1. How dare Sid Lowe and the Guardian publish the Reina interview right before the United game!

2. Why did Reina do this interview right before the United game? If they could read they would see the interview was done early Feb, right after Torres move and at the Spain NT camp.

3. Accusing Sid Lowe of not doing the interview and piece mealing it. Sid Lowe sat down with and interviewed Reina.

It makes me chuckle when some LFC fans praising Reina for being honest and straightforward. No shit sherlock, the man has eyes. He saw what the club and fans did to Torres after he acted the discreet professional. We learned after the transfer that he had repeatedly told the club he wanted to leave. There had been offers prior to 2011. He did tell them that the club needed to invest. He had to be persuaded to give the club more time. Finally they agreed to let him go but asked him to keep it quiet so Ajax wouldn't jack up the price for Suarez. Torres kept quiet the entire time. He knew he wasn't going to leave a hero but he asked the club to give him a dignified exit. And they hung him out to dry. You have muppets believing that Chelsea and Liverpool ironed out a 50M deal in three days from first interest to sale. Yeah, right because four days before Liverpool had no idea Chelsea wanted Torres and that he wanted to go. NO IDEA.

What's the difference between Reina and Torres? Chelsea came back around for Nando and whatever club it was in the summer, didn't for Reina. That's why one's gone and the other is still there. I don't think it's a given that Reina is leaving for sure, but he's obviously paving the way for a possible departure. After what happened with Torres, Reina is obviously taking a different tack. If he lays it out first, the club can't bury him in a PR war like they did with Nando. Smart guy, he may pull off going to Man U without being as hated as Torres. Pretty funny, but that's Liverpool fans for ya, some are so dopey.

Well said and couldn't agree more. Reina isn't any happier than Fernando was before he left. In fact, when Captain Fantastic himself tried to leave the club, TWICE, not sure how other players who are in the EPL for the football and not for some long-existing "history" can be expected to swear undying loyalty to a club that simply isn't good enough. That's utter delusion by the fans.

Shevchenko was not up to English football and we signed him when he was 30. Torres is in his prime but the problem is he aint gonna score unless the other players pick him out which they are not. If Yossi can get back in the side before the end of the season he will get Torres chances

As I have mentioned on the Malouda thread, I am concerned that the french speaking players are ignoring him due to thier affliation with Drogba. This is a problem Ancellotti needs to put a stop to quickly.

Torres looks like a sad little boy at the moment, does not seem to be enjoying his football.

This whole thing about his first goal must be pretty fustrating for Carlo. Not because of the fact Nando hasn't scored for him yet but because of journalists. We can see it - pre-match and post-match conferences and still the same questions about Torres, about his goal, about how he believes in him etc.

Carlo seems to add to the pressure though by keep saying he will score in the next game!!....Torres does not look happy in our team, I hope this changes quickly..

That's a bit of a silly accusation to make isn't it?

Just from looking at his body language and his face he looks really sad. I know he is a quiet bloke so maybe this is just his personality, but he smiled alot more at Liverpool.

Hopefully when the first goal goes in he will be happier but im not sure all is right in the dressing room.

Maybe the family thing is unsettling him. He is still living in a hotel while his young family are still in Liverpool. But yeah your right, he pushed for this move so has to make the most out of it. Maybe a nightout with John Terry would do him good or he could always pop round Waynes Bridges ex missus she still lives in Cobham dont she??
