Stats 7,142
Go back a few pages - it's a long thread - and the same folks are saying the odd goal and assist from Oscar isn't enough and doesn't make good prospect... Compared to Coutinho, Oscar is very very rounded as he's got the defensive side of his game down to exactly what his manager wants. Coutinho is really poor defending and with any physical contact? He's been very poor lately actually, despite a couple of goals in between - went missing several time esp in tough matches. A bad game by Oscar doesn't cost you the game as he's going to do his hard work.At São Paulo an internacional in Brazil Oscar was far more creative and the concern back then was whether he'd ever become a competitive player - mourinho has addressed that beautifully.Grass is definitely greener on the other side. (Carzola Mata... liverpool has one really good player and Coutinho ain't it.Who is then? Coutinho has been Liverpool's best player by far and been much better than Oscar this season. Coutinho has been the shining light in an average season for Liverpool and has stepped up in the absence of Suarez and Sturridge for most games. You mention he has been poor recently. He was their best player against QPR and even the game they lost against Hull, I heard he was Liverpool's best player by far and caused Hull plenty of problems. On top of that Oscar has been worse than Coutinho this season and far too inconsistent. Bar the defensive side which Coutinho has actually improved on Coutinho is better than Oscar in most aspects of his game. You put Oscar in Liverpool's team and there is no way he would be able to do what Coutinho does imo as he does not have the same creativity, flair, skill. Coutinho has massively improved his technique as well this season. Just look at some of the goals he has scored. stroey

I don't think he is overrated at all. I use to be critical of him but when I have watched him I just think he is a superb little player. You just have to look in the Sterling thread when I was arguing with Nike about how inconsistent Coutinho is. That was a few months ago. Now I change and say he is carrying Liverpool and he has a lack of quality around him. Coutinho was Liverpool's best player by far in the City game at Anfield. Ripped them apart. Best played in the 2-2 game against Arsenal. Best player on the field in our COC 1st leg game against them. He also has scored some fantastic goals this season.Coutinho has added genuine quality to Liverpool. Where you think Coutinho is overrated, that is how I feel about Oscar. I think he is a decent player but is made to look good because of the quality players around him. The games where I have mentioned where Coutinho performed excellently, I have never seen Oscar perform like that. That is a fact, not an exaggeration. stroey

It's easy to back Coutinho because of his superior form in the second half of the season, but like Tomo already said, he was rubbish in the first half of the season. Same as Oscar in the second half, but he doesn't have Oscar's level of defensive contribution and work rate to fall back on. Even in his improved showings in the second half of the season, his form fluctuates. Not strange, he's 22.Coutinho's a very aesthetically pleasing player, but the majority of his moves lack purpose. Again, he can pull off one or two wonderful dribbles/passes/shots in a overall average performance, and suddenly his average performance magically turns into a good or great performance. Not that I'm saying he's incapable of producing top performances, he clearly is. Coutinho may not have the same defensive work which I think is a little overrated comparison anyway however Oscar does not have Coutinho's creativity or dribbling skills. I just have not been impressed with Oscar this season and even for the games where we have said he done well, for instance the game against United couple weeks back people said he had a good game for doing that pass which was delightful but apart from that he does not really influence the game. I just think we need a better no.10 because Oscar is way too inconsistent. His form may go up and down but like I was saying earlier, you put Oscar into Liverpool's team and I don't see what he will add. Blue-in-me-Veins 4,067
I find it amazing how out of the MAZACAR *cringes* trio, after so much debate throughout the years and projections on which player had the most talent, which player would go on to be a Chelsea legend, which player had the most upside and in 2/3 years would take the EPL by storm, it is Hazard who is left standing. Obviously Oscar hasn't left yet, but the writing has been on the wall for months now. Barbara 15,149
Disagree. Again, he can pull off one or two wonderful dribbles/passes/shots in a overall average performance, and suddenly his average performance magically turns into a good or great performance. Not that I'm saying he's incapable of producing top performances, he clearly is.I took the guy five months to score his first assist, then he scored another one in the following game both at the end of december. Then two more two weeks later, and in addition to the screamers, that have been his season. I'm not saying that because of poor stats he's bad - it could be a case like Willian where stats don't make the player justice (even if he still lacks end product and should aim to improve on that), but it isn't. Many times his flashy dribbles and plays lead to nothing because he lacks purpose as you correctly put. I've seen a thousand players like Coutinho in Brazil, a thousand. Actually it's what you see the most here, everyday. People say Brazil stopped producing talents and while this is true to some extent, at the same time less and less teams in the five big leagues in Europe fall for the flashy player that is disappointedly poor tactically, even if gifted technically, not to mention the ones that have no vision to make their natural talent matter. Lucas Moura is yet another example of that imo. It's his 3rd year in Europe, a lot of people here and in real life disagreed with me when I said he wouldn't end up being anything relevant - which is why I wanted him to go to United instead of PSG... three years later, he's still inconsistent, fades, has one Messi-alike dribble sequence every now and then, but that's it. What has he influenced in PSG? They're a mess, their managers are clueless, but Lucas doesn't have many things and some of which he won't develop to take his talent to the next level.I see Coutinho as a far superior player (compared to Lucas), but he's even more inconsistent. Henderson should win their POTY, but as Coutinho for some kind of joke made the PFA team of the season, and got some attention lately because of very spaced out screamers, the fans that are specialist in history will vote in the shiny 'new' toy instead of recognizing the player that was more consistent and helped them more throughout the whole season. So, my point is, Coutinho is talented, I've seen a thousand of those in Brazil, but if he doesn't add the purpose on his talented moves he'll be the nearly thousandth Brazilian that is all flash and no end product that matters. Most many teams in the big leagues stopped buying those Brazilian myths, but it seems to fitting so see Liverpool worshiping yet another one. I said Lucas would be the next Denilson (the one that played for Sevilla too). I think Coutinho could go farther, and maybe even become the real deal, but currently there are so many flaws in his overall game (lack of tactical awareness, lack of purpose in most of his plays, huge inconsistency, lack of defensive contribution and work rate, lack of end end product, lack of physical strength, and the list goes on and on) that are overshadowed by his flashy style. It may fool a lot of people - especially here where the grass is always greener, but if he doesn't add a few things to his game, he'll just be one of those players that makes the news sometimes with dribbles and screamers, but that contributes comparatively little to the team's success in a whole season.I do hope he improves though because I'm very fond of the boy. I've followed him closely while he was at Inter and I really hope he goes beyond the useless dribbler label. And if that's the case, I hope some other team that isn't Barça or Bayern comes and get him from Liverpool.
CHOULO19 24,332
Cuadrado?Did Cuadrado make Colombia side? I actually think that would be a good thing for us. Cuadrado needs playing time to regain some form and confidence. The fact that this playing time comes away from Chelsea in a medium he's more used to and is comfortable with is even better, imo. People get so hung up on these moments. Players can play like shit tactically but if they produce a single moment of beauty that's all they remember.I watched quit a lot of Liverpool games this season and he didn't really stood out. Then when he started to get a lot of praise i started to pay more attention to him individually but his performances were the same as previous coupled with the odd assist or goal.Anybody who can't see Coutinho is a typical overhyped piece of crap they don't know anything. And i don't understand why people would prefer him over Oscar in our 10. He wouldn't improve us in any way. We don't need more 'creativity'. We have proven we can score against parked busses. We need some more control in that position and that is something Coutinho would not give at all

But Mourinho sold/allowed creative #10s in Mata and KDB to go. And now with Fabregas in midfield, I doubt he'll be looking for a player of that ilk to play behind the striker.Coutinho's status as Liverpool's star player (according to you, some would argue it's Sterling but it's close either way) is the reason he should be scoring and assisting more. He's the one the players are looking for, he's the one touching the ball the most, he's the one that has to make the difference. Kane 20 goals, Austin 17 goals, Siggurdson 10 assists, Brunt 9 assists. With all the talk of Coutinho's quality and potential (his potential is massive imo), I prefer Eriksen. He's a enjoyed a far better season imo, but does not receive nearly the same amount of hype. He's not as technically gifted as Coutinho, but has the superior tactical awareness, physical presence (in terms of upper body strength, stamina, fitness and durability), consistency and is more effective. Only 23 as well.
