Shevchenko was the only player that was really baught to become the main striker, others like Pizzaro and Kezman were only baught for extra cover, while Anelka was bought becuase of the ACON

Didn't Jose try to wedge Pizzaro into his lineups? He and Shevchenko were not compatible with Drogba in any way. Anelka was a highly-rated journeyman that produced. Torres may prove to be worth every penny paid for him, but he simply hasn't done it yet. I'd still take Drogba because flashier names have come in and withered. As for Roman, I doubt Carlo co-signed to picking up Torres and the Shevchenko signing was mainly the work of Roman and Peter Kenyon. I just think they should have worked on getting a forward that could compliment Drogba's skills, not a big name for flash and bang. It's a little late now...

Fernando is our future whether people want to accept it or not. He is going to be the one the coach has confidence in over the next few years at least. He will most likely try and build the squad around him and if we sign another young striker. We have Daniel but i honestly can't see him getting a look in up front. Hopefully i am proven wrong but right now i just cannot see it happening.

Drogba might continue to play this coming season like he has the last few but after that he is going to have to accept a position on the bench and come on when needed or i think he will look to finish his career else where. I am not saying he is not appreciated he is a class act still at his age but Roman did not sign Fernando for him to sit on the bench.

IMO the type to play alongside Drog would have been a David Speedie clone ...great second striker ,,small fast and extremely feisty.

It has to be Torres. If it isn't Torres next season then lets just sell him now and give Drogba a lifetime playing contract.

Im a huge Drogba fan (as you can probably tell from my sig and avatar) he is my all time favourite player and easily the best lone striker I've ever seen play the game. When Torres was starting ahead of him or when he was ill last season we saw just how important a fully fit Drogba is to Chelsea, he isn;t just a goal scorer but he is also a creator, he is the focal point of our attack and he gives us the option of playing a high ball to the front and Didier can hold it up to give his teammates a chance to join the attack, he is a terrific all rounder and he has been the main man at Chelsea for a very long time. Nobody is doubting the talent of Didier Drogba.

What we are doubting though is the age of Didier Drogba, he is 33, he will be 34 next season and we haven't got him signed to a 5 year contract or anything like that, there is a decent chance that next season will be his last at Chelsea and when he leaves we can all applaud what he has done for our club. But we are looking long term, Fernando Torres wasn't bought for 50 million to sit on a bench. Just from reading this forum generally, opinions on Torres seem to have soured after the dreadful start he made to his Chelsea career and thats understandable but he must be given the chance to succeed and I have complete sympathy with Torres on this one. He wasn't fit, he said so himself, he was rushed back far too soon to make the World Cup and then he picked up another injury at the World Cup. He might not be the outstanding all rounder that Didier Drogba is but we recognise that and I think our pursuit of Modric has a lot to do with trying to get the best out of Torres, for the most part Torres wont create his own chances, he needs a creator whereas Drogba didn't need one as much. Torres is a world class striker, he is a lethal finisher, he has great pace, incredible movement and he has a bit of vision too. Personally I think that this pre season will do him all of the good in the world (lets not forget, he hasn't had a pre season in ages) and I think we will see a world class Fernando Torres next season but to see that he must be given the opportunity, he must be given the chance to thrive, he must be the first choice. Thats not a slight against Drogba, thats simply looking at it long term.

Difficult one.

It all depends on what formation AVB decides on & who we are playing against. If we use Arsanal as an example, well Drogba always seems to score against them & generally runs their defence ragged. Drogba proved towards the end of last season that despite his age he was the form pick.Torres endured a nightmare last season but I believe AVB will employ different tactics to get him scoring again & with that his confidence will thrive too - hopefully giving us the world class player back he was a couple of years ago.

Our service to the frontmen was poor last season so the supply has to improve for either of them to flourish, if I had to make a call on this then I would go with Torres starting generally & Drogba being used like scum u do with giggs but I don't say that with much courage, as AVB may just surprise us all & start with both!

If Drogba is first choice, we might win more games THIS YEAR because of the supporting team we have, but next year we'll be back to where we are now, with a new first choice striker. So why would you ask AVB to make Drogba first choice this year, his first year, and then change next year. Doesn't make sense.

If all you care about is this year, then Drogba.

But, if you care about the future, then Torres.

Either way, Torres as first choice is inevitable, so why not coincide that with the appointment of a new manager. It's simple logic really.

I personally choose Drogba over Torres, i've wanted to get rid of Torres for some time now. I just don't have any faith in him or anything for what he will do for this club. I would love to have Sturridge, Falcao & Drogba, but i seriously doubt Drogba would sit on the bench without moaning. But i think Drogba is more effective than Torres and can score more goals than him, despite Drogbas age. It was only because of the Maloria which knocked him out of form he didn't score much goals this season, he was pretty much on fire before that.

I'd leave it for AVB to decide, he's the only one who knows how his team is going to play and who will suit the team more. It's a decision I'm willing to back him on.

I want Drogba to stay for a couple reasons.

First of all, I really don't think too much change over a short period of time will help the team. Assuming that Anelka and Malouda will leave, if we let Drogba go as well, then we'll have three new (or fairly new) faces up front, and that's no good, especially since pre-season starts in less than a week, and we don't even know whom we'll sign or if we will sign anyone at all.

Secondly, I am still uncertain about Torres like everyone else here. He still has a lot to prove, and there is too much risk involved in going with Torres only. Besides, Torres is highly prone to injury, so you never know.

So, I think we should keep Drogba for one more season, and preferably, he'll leave next summer. I think that's the best decision for the team and hopefully for Drogba as well.

But if we're going to keep him, we'll have to play him often. He's not gonna be happy if he sits out most of the time, and the last thing we need is an angry Drogs. So ideally, we should find a way to play both of them together. Drogba worked it out with Anelka, so I don't see why he can't do the same with Torres.

If it doesn't work, however, we should focus on Torres. No matter what people think of him, the club won't let go of him that easily even if he's going downhill from here. He cost Roman £50m, and that should tell you that we're stuck with him whether we like him or not. So yeah, keep both of them, and we'll gradually work towards building the team around Torres.

I know it nearly has to be one or the other and we have spent all this money on Torres but I can't just be like oh thanks Drogba see ya! If Chelsea are losing a match I always feel better when hes on the pitch! Hes a legend, I would love it if AVB could make them play together! Even though I've been obsessed with Torres for years....I still don't think I'd pick him over Drogba. I'd be really sad to see him leave.
