Perfectly said.
I love Didier, and he is my favorite striker, but Eto'o was a level above him.
Would have been amazing if we had both at the same time as was hinted on here when we got an Old Eto'o(Who was still our best striker at that time).

False, Eto'o had better seasons in 05/06, 08/09 and 10/11.
Drogba was a fantastic big game player but Eto'o was the same as well: only 4 players in modern Champions League have scored in two different finals, and they are Eto'o, Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi and Raul.
Eto'o is the only player in history to have done two Trebles with different teams, and he trumps Drogba in overall goals, assists, club trophies, national trophies (2 African Cups, whose is all time top scorer, vs Drogba's zero) and personal achievements.
Didier obviosuly is THE Chelsea Legend, one of the best african players ever and one of the best strikers of the past 15/20 years, yet you can't just ignore facts as Eto'o stands above him in pretty much every football-related category.
As for the thread, irrespective of the achievements Costa will reach, it's obvious that Didier was the utterly superior player, he was not even comparable and on a total different level.

What are you basing that on? 'not even debatable' hahahahha ok. He is a Chelsea legend but that doesn't mean he is the greatest striker the world have ever seen.
Going off statistic alone Drogba is not even comparable with those 2, never mind the manager argument. Eto'o didn't exactly known for his good working relationship with managers either, felt out with both Pep and Mourinho eventually so you can't use that excuse. If you are basing your judgement on amount of final goals/big game goals Drogba scored then those 2 I mentioned also scored in CL finals.
-
Hamon reacted to MrBlueGuy in 🇪🇸 Diego Costa
Drogba was a big game player, if we are talking about pure football ability then a prime Drogba was never as good as a prime Villa or Eto'o, there is a reason why those 2 have multiple seasons of 20-30 goals while Drogba only had 2 with us: 2006/07 and 2009/10.

Hamon reacted to lionsden in 🇪🇸 Diego Costa
The bottomline is they were more consistent and more prolific than Drogba, the rest is just excuses. ifs and buts.
If your definition of big game is only limited to cup finals then yes he's the best big game player indeed although eto'o has scored in every champions league final he's ever played in and rose to the challenge more often than not whenever the occasion called for it in his prime, same with Villa.
No one has disputed drogba's technical ability but in comparison to those two striker, he was a level below in that regard. Didier's game was based on power and strength while Eto'o and Villa were the epitome of finesse and technique.
-
Hamon reacted to lionsden in 🇪🇸 Diego Costa
Don't be ridiculous. Prime Eto'o and villa were superior in every facet of the game except hold up play and aerial ability. They were more clinical, superior technical ability, superior movement, more consistent and more intelligent.

On a serious note, fully agree. Eto'o especially on a lesser role would have done what was required.

To be honest I think it would have been much better to keep Eto'o for one more season than bringing back Drogba. He is younger and not completely past it like Didier. While not brilliant I think the job he did here last season is quite underrated. He scored some important goals and I think he could have been a better 2nd striker option than both Drogba and Torres.
It's a pity his relationship with Jose deteriorated over something so stupid. Still I think he would have stayed if the board had decided to sell the whiny Lukaku earlier, but then again probably Jose intended to start the season with him until the £ 28 m offer came out of the blue.

Well, it's nearly 2am, I arrive home to this news. I've spent the whole day out and I had no idea what was going on.
Anyhoo, I was giving it some consideration... we need someone like him in the dressing room. This is the guy that fires you up from the the dressing room, from the bench and the moment he enters the pitch.
Also he can continue from where Eto'o stopped being someone else to help Eden Hazard fulfill his potential. I think Eto'o's presence was crucial for Eden last year and I think Didier's can make wonders for him. Those guys have the kind of personality that Eden needs to have around him and learn from. I hope he helps him as much as Samu did.
I don't think what he's done for us is at stake. This idea some have that he will tarnish and lose the perfect career he had with us is crazy imo. What could he do to even stain what he's done? Absolutely nothing. If he misses an important penalty it won't undo what's done. I don't think as a striker he adds that much. I think he adds a bit less than Eto'o because his legs seem more tired... but he's still a beast in the air and that's something Samu didn't offer for us. So maybe he could still be useful as a striker in the pitch, but his impact in the squad, in the dressing room, in the bench and in our hearts is nearly immeasurable.
I wasn't fond of this, but now that the deal is done I'm holding onto the positives. If this somehow gets Torres out of Stamford Bridge for good, that's is the deal of the century. I think José is also targeting on Didier to mentor Lukaku in addition to Eden. I don't see Romelu leaving for a decision made by the club. Maybe he decides to go somewhere else, but he should know having a mentor such as Didier Drogba is invaluable.

In Russia, making 20,5 mln per year, after winning 2 African Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, a bunch of Ligas and Copa del Rey, a Serie A, 2 Italian Cups, an Italian Supercup, 3 Champions League (with 2 Trebles)... oh yeah, Mourinho saved him.
On the contrary, I'd say that, if not for Eto'o, Mourinho wouldn't have a freaking Treble in his palmares.
Despite the "problems" in the past between Chelsea and Eto'o, he came here, and while clearly past his prime (that was obvious, you wouldn't get a prime Eto'o free), he gave it all for the team, scored 12 goals in no more than 30 games or so, and showed to be a top professional; also, the youngsters (especially Hazard) benefited from his experience and mentality.
Completely agree, especially with the bold part.
Eto'o used to "love" Mourinho because he thought he was one direct guy, who tells you the truth in your face: he obviously feels betrayed by Mourinho's backstabbing.
Think about Mourinho saying something so disrespectful about Didier? Would you be happy?
So, if I were Eto'o, I would be pissed aswell.

Agreed. Eto'o seemed close to Mourinho and spoke highly of him, so to find out he was making jokes about him behind his back must have pissed him off.
I have no problem with Eto'o's comments, if anything he deserves credit for how tame they are because I can name many players who would have been more blunt.

If I'm not mistaken Eto'o narrowly missed that. Wasn't a bad decision at all, Eto'o is our striker, he scored today and was coming in from the left with his right foot. Had he scored no one would've made any stink about it. Salah was in good space too but after last week I wouldn't bet on him to finish that

I'm not blaming the Ref!
Ramires should have walked - that was ridiculous behaviour and if it was Suarez we'd all be going mad! Ramires has a dirty streak and I'm done forgiving him. He's not Chelsea material and I don't want to see him again after the summer!
We took the lead and then 'crumbled' instead of dominating - how many times this season has that happened! This is OUR problem.
We should never put ourselves in the position (as with Villa) where the Ref can fuck us.
So you can blame the Ref as much as you want - I don't, I blame the past 6 years of managerial instability, I blame the lack of football identity and I blame the players for being awful when it counts. HOWEVER all of this can and will be resolved in the next 2-3 seasons with the right investment in players and a steady managerial presence!
Long game people...

I am reading comments, which are "Willian is shit?!" REALLY?! HE RAN THE WHOLE GOD DAMN MATCH AND DID EVERYTHING HE COULD? HIS FAULT OSCAR IS A MENTALLY EXHAUSTED CHILD? Oscar and Ramires were like playing 9 men, a part from the fact Oscar had a shot from free kick. Ramires, penalty, not given, decides to punch Larrson, really?! Are you that of a retarded cunt to do this , when we are drawn 1 - 1 and we need to win. You stupid fuck. I hope you dont play for the rest of the season, because this one was just awful for you. Back to Oscar, the moment he left the field , the moment Andre stepped in, was the moment we became direct, unike the other 60 minutes.
