Forget winning it this year - we probably won't be in it next year, either.

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard admits he is beginning to get concerned about not qualifying for next year's UEFA Champions League. The 32-year-old has seen his side struggle in the Premier League this season, despite a fantastic start to the campaign, and Carlo Ancelotti's men currently sit fifth in the top-flight.

Both Tottenham and Manchester Cityspacer.gif are doing their utmost to finish in the top four this term and if Chelseaspacer.gif miss out on a place in Europe's elite club competition, the financial consequences could have a major impact on their future.

"I've not thought about failing to qualify for the Champions Leaguespacer.gif too much, but it's a serious worry," Lampard said in The Times.

"We're fifth, it's as simple as that, and have to keep winning game by game.

"We understand that a club like Chelsea should be in the Champions League, but nothing's given to you in the Premier League these days.

"There's a fear we won't qualify, so we need to pull our fingers out and win games."

The English champions are currently 12 points behind league leaders Manchester Unitedspacer.gif and face an uphill struggle if they are to claw themselves back into contention.

Lampard's Bluesspacer.gif take on Copenhagen in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday and the England man admits the priority could now switch to Europe.

"From where we are, the Champions League will be easier to win than the Premier League," he added.

"You know how many games you've got and don't even have to win them all.

Experience

"We've got good experience in the competition, but that won't count for much if we don't perform.

"If we can get on a run now, and play as we know we can, then it could be our season."

Fernando Torres's £50million move to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline-day will no doubt boost Chelsea's cause.

Lampard insists that the Spaniard should not carry the burden of their poor form, though, and hopes the team will be able to adapt and fit him into their system.

He remarked: "It certainly shouldn't be put on Torres' shoulders. He's an easy target as he cost £50million and a lot of people want to see him fail, particularly up north.

"That's the nature of football. But he's very strong-minded and a world-class player, so it'll only be a matter of time before he starts scoring and shows what he can do.

"We have to be able to adapt. When you bring in individuals of Torres' quality, you have to be happy because it adds to the team.

"We just have to make it work. When you've got quality players working hard, formations can be overtalked."

Let me just say, it would be ridiculously harsh on us, if we see Arsenal with that fighting conspiracy we saw when they beat 2-1 against Barcelona, and we can't beat a team like Copenhagen! :mouthclosed:

Life will continue to be harsh on us unless Carlo changes things.

Hope is the last thing you loose.

Until we get eliminated, we are still alive.

So Chelsea has every chance of turning this around like Arsenal did against Barcelona.

CL is special, where the players come alive.

I have no doubt in my mind that these players that are producing poorly will suddenly have a lift in play.

We all know what's gonna happen tho don't we. Either we'll try too hard and be shit or we'll get done by a ref who is unaware of the football rules. I'd love us to win this competition but i think we've blown our chances. Maybe knowing that we only have that left will work in our favour.

No doubt go out in a game involving some dodgy ref decisons ..becoming the norm for us really

We'll need a lot of luck, granted, but so has every team that's won the competition in the last seven-eight years.

Liverpool finished 5th when they won it, remember...

liverpool was a different case , they were a cup team which was designed to defend and scratch a goal from a counter attack , they were expected to have one or two scoring opportunities each match but they made the most of them ...

they used a different game and had a different style , they let the opposition have possession for most of the game and punish them on counters , same as Greece in euro 2004 or Italy in the world club ...

they struggled in the league because they drew too many matches against weaker teams who just park bus and don't attack them , then they weren't able to use their defend and punish on the counter strategy ..

anyway that was a special case that is not expected to be repeated every now and then , the winner of the ucl is usually one of the best teams in europe , inter was the most effective team last year , barca was superb the year before , man utd was arguably with chelsea the best teams in 2008 ...

you can't be playing like shit and expect the luck to be your friend !!!

our only hope is we get an easy draw in the quarter finals , and get the weakest team in the semi- finals and be at our best at the final with luck at our side . do you really believe that's gonna happen ??
