The reason why he plays so many sideways passes is because he is being told too by the coaching staff. And the difference between Mikel and Makelele was that Makelele could take on an attacker one on one, slow them down and get the ball back. Maybe I'll change my opinion of him if he scores the winning goal in the cup final, but until then, he's just a poor man's Essien in my eyes.
