Had to think of Genk who we played in 2011 in CL but apparently   Gent  is something different. 

My only associations with Gent are the world wars and the legendary medieval Duke of Lancaster who was born there 

 

Apparently when we bought KDB, we did so from Genk but he played for Gent before Genk. I assume one day he just mistyped in his google maps, ended up 100km further east and just showed up for training cos the differences were basically negligible. 

 

their badge is a bit odd tho. Don’t think a club in Germany could keep this without a shit storm.

I will forget what you wrote and just pretend we are playing against Genk. 😅

I'd rather rest Jorgensen and start Sanchez for this game, but given that we will be seeing Sanchez once again for the next PL match, then might as well let Jorgensen play. Playing against such weak opposition will hardly help a goalie make a case to start tho.

KAA Gent is nicknamed: the Buffalos. Every match, the cry “Buffalo! Buffalo! KAA Gent!” is shouted in the stands. This has been the case since the 1920s. Since 1924, an Indian chief has adorned the KAA Gent flag. Since 2001, Buffalo Ben has fulfilled the role of mascot on and around the field. In 2010, he was joined by Buffalo Mel.

History

The origin of the cry “Buffalo!” dates back to 1895. That was when the circus of the American William Cody, nicknamed Buffalo Bill, came to Ghent for the first time. In the show, the audience was encouraged to shout “Buffalo! Buffalo!”. Following the passage of William Cody, Ghent students introduced the cry into Ghent student life. For example, in 1913, King Albert I was welcomed with “Buffalo! Buffalo!” during his visit to Ghent University.

During the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920, the Belgian athlete Omer Smet, member of the athletics department of KAA Gent, responded to the rhythmic shouting of the American delegation with the student-like cry “Buffalo! Buffalo!”. Together with him, KAA Gent was nicknamed The Buffaloes. The association first used this nickname in its magazine in 1921. In 1924, an Indian chief appeared for the first time on a supporters’ flag of the football department of KAA Gent.

The long time that elapsed between the arrival of Buffalo Bill in 1895 and the use of a Native American as a logo in a sporting context explains why the cowboy William ‘Buffalo’ Bill Cody became an Indian in 1924. The people of Ghent associated his circus, which visited Ghent in both 1895 and 1906, almost thirty years later mainly with the Sioux and the striking headdress of the chiefs who performed in the circus. That is why an Indian has adorned the Buffalo flag ever since.

Social debate

The interview between De Standaard and Mrs. Suzan Shown Harjo does not show that Mrs. Suzan Shown Harjo had heard of KAA Gent or the logo, mascot or nickname of KAA Gent before the interview. The immediate equation with the American context leads Mrs. Suzan Shown Harjo to classify all of this as ‘racist’. 

KAA Gent has too much respect for the life’s work of Mrs. Suzan Shown Harjo and her enormous importance to the native Americans to criticise her for this. After all, KAA Gent is very well aware of the social debate that rages in American society about the use of Indian stereotypes and caricatures by sports clubs. 

The context in which the KAA Gent logo and nickname came into being were explained in detail in the club’s Champions League brochure for this reason, for example. In January 2016, information was requested on this subject by a journalist from the American news channel CNN. Every now and then, the story also needs to be explained to American tourists who visit the Ghelamco Arena. Never before have the Buffalos, the logo or the mascots been met with incomprehension for racist reasons.

There are indeed some not unimportant comments to be made, both regarding the use of the nickname “Buffalo”, the logo, and the performance of the Ghent mascots, which makes us believe that the Buffalo tradition of KAA Gent cannot be understood as racist.

Logo 

The KAA Gent logo, unlike certain other logos, is not a stereotypical caricature. Nor is it a representation of an aggressive savage. The KAA Gent logo is a neutral image in profile of a native American, looking straight ahead, towards the future.

Nickname

Our name is KAA Gent: Royal Athletics Association Ghent. Our nickname has been: the Buffalos since the 1920s. The nickname is the result of a student tradition, as can happen in a student city.

Mascots

The roles of Buffalo Ben and Buffalo Mel as mascots of KAA Gent are more recent than the name and logo suggest. Ben has been active for 15 years, Mel for 6 years. They primarily symbolise the family character of KAA Gent. As volunteers, they are committed to representing all the positive aspects of KAA Gent. They do this not only at the club's sporting activities, but also in the context of supporters' initiatives or in the social activities of the community work.

Because of this historical and cultural context in which the nickname and logo came about and because of the positive role that the mascots play, we believe that KAA Gent in no way treats the native Americans in a racist or insulting manner in the European context outlined.”

 

As a 1990s European man this native American topic is quite beyond me, I don’t want to judge it, but willing to buy this explanation. On the other hand, Redskins logo also had to go, even though it was also an act of paying respect to a NA man.

 

I don’t know if it was mentioned, but Eidur Gudjohnsen’s son(who was one of my childhood favourite) is playing at Gent, crazy..

There is also a 19 years old Hungarian winger, Zalan Vancsa, who recently signed for them. He is owned by City group, considered as big talent, at least in Hungarian level.

Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie (K.A.A.) Gent is from Ghent

Koninklijke Racing Club (K.R.C.) Genk is from Genk, another Belgian city (smaller)

Definitely favourites to win Europe’s new-look third-tier competition , albeit it remains to be seen just how seriously Enzo Maresca takes it. Seeing as we only just scraped by  Servette in the play-off round its uncertain - such is the pressure of being heavy favourites for every game we’ll play.
