Lesley Ugochukwu

An initial eight-week timeframe was put on Ugochukwu’s return from a hamstring injury suffered in late December.

The Blues have not provided any substantial update on his progress, instead only defining him as “continuing to undergo his rehabilitation programme”.

Potential return date: Unknown

Yeah, that’s what I mean.. Late December said 8 weeks, now it’s the 12th week of 2024, and no comments from the club. And he is not the only one. Lavia, Cucurella, Nkunku, Chilwell or Chalobah were all absent for much longer time then the club communicated. Or this is on purpouse communication strategy?

I think it's just another sign of our medical dept's incompetency. They can't estimate correctly nor are they capable of treating correctly.

I reckon it is both.

Chelsea recall Lesley Ugochukwu from France Olympic squad

The French Football Federation (FFF) says Chelsea have recalled Lesley Ugochukwu from his participation with the France Olympic squad.

Ugochukwu was named in Thierry Henry’s preliminary selection for the under-23 tournament in his home country in June but missed out on a place in the condensed 18-man squad earlier this month.

However, Olympic football rules allow teams to take up to four replacements that can come in for any injured players in the initial selection at any time during the tournament, and then return to replacement status if the player returns to fitness. U.S. women’s head coach Emma Hayes said last week she sees it as a 22-player squad. As the Olympics is not a tournament within a FIFA window, club sides are allowed to block their players from participating.

Ugochukwu joined Chelsea from Rennes for around £23.5million ($30.3m) last summer. The 19-year-old featured regularly as a rotation option in the first half of the season but suffered a hamstring injury that saw him miss most of the second half of the campaign, ending with 15 appearances across competitions.

The Athletic reported earlier this month that Chelsea were reviewing loan options for Ugochukwu, with the club’s priority that the midfielder spends the season at another Premier League team. Chelsea have been back in training since July 4 and are due to head to the U.S. for a pre-season tour on Monday, where they will face Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Henry’s France side, meanwhile, have been drawn in Group A alongside the U.S., Guinea and New Zealand.

The Athletic has contacted Chelsea for comment.

Chelsea yet to decide whether to recall Lesley Ugochukwu from Southampton loan, says Enzo Maresca

Enzo Maresca says Chelsea have yet to make a decision over whether to recall midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu from his loan spell at Southampton next month.

Ugochuku joined Southampton, who Chelsea play at St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday night, on a season-long loan in August.

But the 20-year-old has started just two Premier League games since then and played just 425 minutes in all competitions overall.

Southampton coach Russell Martin left him out of the squad altogether for their last game against Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday and Ugochukwu responded by deleting mentions of Southampton from his social media accounts (although they seem to have been restored now).

But when asked if Chelsea will trigger a break clause in the loan agreement when the window opens next month, Maresca said: “I have no idea at the moment, no idea about loans or transfers. Before January we have seven Premier League games, there are too many matches to be thinking about that.”

Chelsea agreed to send Ugochukwu, who has made 15 appearances for them since joining from Rennes for around £23.5m last year, to Southampton in order for him to get more first-team football this season.

Chelsea will be without Reece James and Wesley Fofana (both hamstring) for the Southampton game on Wednesday night. Southampton will be missing Tyler Dibling, Flynn Downes and Taylor Harwood-Bellis due to suspension, while Aaron Ramsdale, Will Smallbone, Adam Lallana, Jan Bednarek and Ross Stewart are injured.

Probably an arguement to add him to the B team and send Casadei off on loan. His profile is probably actually a better fit for the B team than Casadei as he is more similar to Lavia and Caicedo than Casadei? Which means he can slot into the A team more easily.
