Same player for me though... If a bad player is on the roster for a long time he's bound to play eventually; that's why clubs should never keep bad players.

When Alexis went pass Mikel, as if he weren't there, I remembered how much I dislike Mikel as a player. I honestly said WTF at that moment - as if actually surprised me - it shouldn't have.

I have a really hard time finding anything Mikel does well. Passing? Nope. Either Fabregas is a great passer or Mikel is, because a technical gulf separates the two. Ever seen Mikel switch play with a long ball? I've seen him try. :)

Defending? If jogging behind the line of play and letting players run past him - like folks acknowledge he does even when ?praising? him above - is defending, then I don't know what Zouma does.

I couldn't decide who was worse Mikel or Flamini... both are technically inferior players. Mikel is stronger and Flamini tries harder... but boy painful to watch them pay football!

Mikel is a decent long passer. His long range passing is impressive. I remember stating it here before but he provided a fantastic assist for Drogba when we battered Portsmouth a few seasons ago. Also I remember when we beat Cardiff in the FA Cup a few seasons ago, he did something very similar for Drogba. He has a knack for trying that sort of pass. I think he done the same last season for one of our strikers who was not able to put the ball in the back of the net. Cannot remember specifically who though.

I know you aren't a big fn and regularly criticize him but he is no way the bad player you make him to be. You mentioned the thing about Alexis but you did not mention that apart from that he was solid and usually is under Hiddink.

He is very composed on the ball as well which I like about him. Let's enjoy that ankle breaker he performed on Ramsey :D

And to try to compare Mikel and Flamini is ridiculous. Flamini is awful and no way near the same league as Mikel. While Coquelin has been injured, Arsenal would have taken Mikel in a heartbeat.

Sorry but the excuses of average squad player do not fly anymore. Now as a starter, the bar is a lot higher. Decent long passer should no longer be enough. If we like Mikel as a starter now, then other players should get a free pass too, like your beloved Oscar.

Hiddink, the magician turned our 10 year and one PL goal into a good starter for a top club. Come on... And I am the one making things up... :)

Flamini is a lot better than Mikel at defending.... I mean a lot better! He has the intensity, the pace, and puts his foot out there to stop a run or even consistently foul players. Is he a bad player, yup! Perhaps, like you said, a worse footballer than Mikel. However, they both belong in the same tier market value wise - cheap.

Mikel is very good with short passes especially when under little pressure. When under pressure his stats go down very fast. He just cannot hit those wonderful long balls when it matters, can he? You have to cite FA Cup matches, because in any remotely competitive match, such as the one against Arsenal, he was pretty unremarkable. I'd say he was having a very hard time until the red card, and was only decent afterwards, again, because he was under little pressure.

To each his own - to me having Mikel as a starter is certainly part of the problem. Others seem to think otherwise.

Just to list the actual problem here: we are not very good and cannot compete for silverware.

With him being a nailed on starter, now, I reckon he has a good chance, probably next season, of making it into the top 5 most PL appearances in the history of the club. He's 18 behind Drogba right now:

He's also top 4 in the all time appearances by players from outside the UK. Legend.

okay..his first game under hiddink was great but this guy is absolute shite..and you people say that he is great defensive..today one good tackle. people ran him all time. must be sold asap

"Must be sold asap" lol

I wished the same thing years and years ago, but as you can see above, he is entering in the top 5 Chelsea appearences in PL. Really doubt he is leaving.

Nah, Mikel is limited and is the typical guy that is happy to play less than 10 league games per season and his wages are cheap, and his market price is pretty low. To other side, average players like Matic, with not so cheap wages and with a decent market value should be sold in order to get some money.

Cundy's always been a big fan :D

But in all seriousness he did have a very good game against united apart from the first about ten minutes when the whole team started badly. He put in a great shift, especially towards the end where he was dropping back as a CB then taking the ball forward to the midfield. Him and JT worked their hearts out after we went behind. Hard to get that sort of fighting spirit out of players who haven't been here that long.
