Nonsense.

Don't think it's nonsense at all, he's not good enough at this moment if we're trying to get back into a top 4 european side.

So bin him off because you don't fancy him this season? Again, nonsense. We already finished Top 4 with James playing as RB. Just because he isn't wowing everyone while playing in a relatively new position doesn't mean to bin him completely when he is still our most talented youth product.

Sure, that's the mentality when you're at spurs level and ambition, not at CFC. Why bin him, he would still get tons of opportunity in the cups and weaker UCL group games, plus he would learn from someone better and more experienced. I don't expect Azpi to stay much longer either. Let's not make reference to last season which was an absolute shithousery at the end and kind of got lucky with LEI shitting the bed; it was a very low points total relative to other seasons.

People are speaking RCB or RWB but I think midfield. Now we lost Kova and Tuchel confirmed he did not planned to play Kante for 90mins because it is a risk. So James need to step up and play in double pivot.

He played as MF for Wigan and naturally this should be best position for him. I hope TT is aware of this option.

Nobody is talking about binning him completely. Just saying we need an upgrade as first choice RB for next season.

At the moment, James is struggling to  kick on and with the exception of Mount, so are our other Chelsea boys. I'm personally not in any hurry to see us sell any of them.  At worst, they're already useful squad players and only time will tell if they can up their levels to be first choice players for a club which wants to win the league.

And I reiterate for a third time, its nonsense.

I've genuinely lost count of certain members nitpicking (yes, that's what it is. Nitpicking) faults in our youth players.  First it was Mount and that he needs to be out on loan, some suggesting over Gallagher, and now James apparently isn't good enough. I've already seen the former prove such comments to be utterly nonsense, looking forward to James proving the same when he's hardly put a foot wrong in a season where every club has been inconsistent.

Btw. We should never have sold Lampety, who is a better player than James.

Bookmarked. Cannot wait to revisit this next season.

Based on what? 7 games at the start of the season and a handful of games last season? Really?

No doubt he is a good prospect but again, people throwing James under the bus for others is nothing new and it’s jumping the gun to say that Lamptey is better based on maybe what 15 games...?

This is basically the Connor Gallagher v Mason Mount thing again, in all realism if Lamptey played here and James at Brighton it would be the exact same situation but your post would be “James is better than Lamptey why did we sell him”. Its not harder to play for Brighton or West Brom than it is for Chelsea because the expectations are so much more extreme and the level you have to be at it. Here a draw is basically a disaster 75% of the time and 2 points dropped the majority of the time, at a Brighton or a WBA it is a point gained. The lesser expectations also means that if a player has a bad game or two at a smaller club, you shrug it off or you say well its to be expected or we played a top team today, but at a big club obviously the managers and players demand much more from each other.

Reece has put in some very solid performances in his near full 2 seasons here. Hes maybe lacking a bit of intensity and concentration at times in the games, you can see it but its something that will get drilled into him for sure because we have big players and a big manager. He could also be a bit more adventurous in the final third as he has excellent delivery at times and tends to be a bit predictable but hes also had games where he’s had these and played well. I think his development is going alright overall from the player he was at Wigan to now, the level has changed and he has still managed to come in, step up to the level, get called up to the English NT also and also look like he belongs there as well as here.

Fully agree. The funny thing is, some of the people critising James now were probably shouting when he was at Wigan he was better than Wan Bissaka and definitely should be our first choice/come into the role ahead of Azpi. Obviously young players can be inconsistent, its what happens to most when they are young players, bar a select handful. Even Haaland or Mbappe will have a period where they maybe have a run of poor games. It happens. Wouldn’t worry about it. Next season it will be another young player ie. Connor Gallagher and someone else we’ve loaned/let go, for instance say if Gilmour left on loan.

Anyone who isn't very good at defending shouldn't really have any position in the defence, especially for teams looking to challenge for the big trophies.

For me, one of his big problems is his physique. He looks more like a Rugby League player than a footballer. He's a bit too big and bulky which makes him a bit too slow in his reactions and movements and a bit one paced, which also makes h look a bit lazy at times.

Nah I think he is just a composed character who can look phlegmatic at times. Nothing wrong with his physique . Adama traore is similar height, much bigger and still agile as a gazelle

I just think Lamprey is better on the balll and has more agility than James. The only things James has over Lamptey is height and strength.

Lamptey is obviously more exciting to watch because he is a real livewire and looks to take on his man at every attempt. But I don't agree that he is better than James. James has his odd lapses defensively but he is a better defender than Lamptey. Much better crosses of the ball and has one of the best deliviries around. I don't see how you could suggest Lamptey is better on the ball than James. James technique is one of his best assets.

I seriously question how long some people have been watching football. How old is James? 20/21? What are people expecting from him exactly? World class performances week in, week out? I am sorry but it doesn't work like that. With young players you have to give them opportunities and time to develop. It is very unusual to get a young player like Rooney or Mbappe who are ready from the age of 18 or in Rooney's case 16/17.

This thread is starting to become reminiscent of the Mount one, who at one time should've been replaced with Gallagher and only played because he was SFL's son.

Furthermore, some of the people complaining are also probably the one's who moan about us selling KdB and Salah. However, guess what, they were sold as they weren't 'ready' to play at world class levels, week in, week out at 22-23, let alone 20-21.

Again, nobody is suggesting we sell James any time soon!

Selling Lamprey for a laughable 3 million was criminal! Might as well have given him a free transfer. The only possible reason I can think of for why the club rated him so low, was maybe he's one of those odd players who aren't great trainers and need the match day atmosphere to show their best.

As for KDB and Salah. I've read that they both wanted to leave due to lack of playing time, so we let them go.

Lamptey wanted to leave and had 6 months left on his contract, that's why the valuation was low. If he'd stayed and played U23 footie for the remainder of the season he'd have been a free agent so 3 million was definitely better than nothing for a player who had a grand total of 45 minutes professional football under his belt.

The club offered Lamptey an extension but he refused because he wanted a clearer path to first team football and Brighton were willing to give him that. With a reliable veteran like Azpilicueta and a hugely rated youngster like James in the team I really can't blame the club nor Lamptey himself for the situations around his transfer.

Just what @Jypesaid.

The club rated him very highly but he had James and Azpi both in front of him. His contract ran out in 6 months. Lamps brought him on while we were 1-0 down to Arsenal last season and he made an impact. But we were spoilt for choice in that position. He made the best move for himself. Now he has got an improved contract and is a nailed on starter for a PL team who play good football.

James has had a very good season. I would say he was better under Lamps due to playing in the RB position. He has not featured as regularly under Tuchel but generally in the games he has played, he has played well. Wouldn't swap him for most RB in the prem. Like Mount, people criticizing James will soon be eating their words, I promise that.

Thanks for that info on Lamprey. The transfer makes more sense after reading that.

Think he might well be playing for a top 6 club in a couple of years.

James participated in 17 of 18 games under Tuchel.

I personally never compared him to Lamptey and I have big hopes for him but I would not say he is having very good season. This is due to him playing wing back which is clearly not position for him.

For this position you have to offer a lot going forward. After 3 attackers wing backs are most offensive players in this system. So basically like two number 8 for Lampard.

In PL in 16/17 season Alonso had 6 goals and 3 assists, Moses 3 goals and 3 assists. 17/18 Alonso 7g 2a, Moses 3g 4a. James is on 0/0 under Tuchel as wing back. CHO 2 assists in the same time. CHO is easily ahead now for this position because he offers much more going forward. James is great crosser but unless Olie is on the pitch we wont use that.

I remember last season he had some WOW games and MOTM performances but I dont remember any of that this season. I would try him in midfield or RCB.
