milka 3,393
Former Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero is 'very close‘ to joining #Chelsea to become understudy to Thibaut Courtois. [TyC Sports] Willy Caballero is on the verge of joining Chelsea on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City. [@CLMerlo]

Pizy 18,913
Agree with those above saying good business. When City actually got their act together defensively he was easily better than Bravo. Would be a very decent backup.

Magic Lamps 11,692
massive downgrade from Bego and not homegrown. We really should use the second GK spot to ge tthe homegrown quota up. Caballero is not a bad keeper but error prone and too short. Without having reasearched I can remember 3 games where his errors cost his team points. As Malaga keepr vs Real when he let a tame Benzema shot through his legs, 2015 when they lost 4-1 at Spurs he cost two goals with horrible positioning and he should have saved Hazards shot when we won 2-1 at the Bridge.

He was a great keeper before coming here but clearly needs to be playing every week to maintain that level. Dont think Caballero is much of a downgrade at all. About the same, I'd say. Blue Colored Sky 1,807
If he's announced soon, will it trash the theory that Chelsea wait for Nike deal to kick in to announce signings? Or he's too minor to bother?

As a backup keeper I am fine with it. He is a decent keeper and considering we got £10m for Begovic and getting Caballero on a free, not bad business and like Pizy said, there is not a clear margin between the two. King11Didier 916
I also think he is on the same level as Begovic and it's not really a downgrade, I think he can do the job for a second choice keeper. The only negative thing is that he is not HG, but if we want to have a HG 2nd choice keeper, we have to either pay a big sum (Butland) or have a poor 2nd keeper(Ruddy). akgw13 867
fine backup GK for me. I would be fine seeing his name on the team sheet when Courtois needs a rest. HG was always a bonus, good solid signing.
Eidur the Spider 4,515
Signing makes total sense. Solid GK, and a free transfer, freeing up even more funds for other areas. Happy days.

Superblue 6,372
People that are against this signing have to remember we are talking the role of a backup goalkeeper. It is a very specialist role because in normal circumstances they will not play often. I thought Begovic was an outstanding signing at the time, but agree with some on here, he didn't look anywhere near as good for Chelsea as he used to for Stoke. I think a lot of that is to do with the adjustment from playing week in week out to being a back up and coming in periodically. What Caballero does have is experience of being exactly that, a backup for one of the top clubs so (1) he's used to the role of a backup keeper and (2) he's experienced playing the role in one of the top clubs where pressure is much greater. Add to this solid premier league and champions league experience, and a free transfer to boot and I think this is clever business by the club if it happens. Funnily enough Begovic best performances were in our massive rut as he was in familiar territory as in playing for a side struggling where he was called upon a lot. Season just gone was his first experience of playing for a side at the top and I thought he was out of his depth, I'm curious to know what his save percentage was in the games he played because I can't recall him actually making one.
