Sir Mikel OBE 4,920
Hopefully today proved to him that he is replaceable, and that he will have to play better to get back into the team. Ossie the King

Huh? He tried to derail the thread by bringing up a player that has nothing to do with Matic.

JOB is far from infallible but unlike Matic he can actually pass and is one of the best in the World under pressure. He added swagger and confidence to the team today and played well alongside Chelsea's current whipping boy under awful conditions. Â The entire team must be delighted that they aren't playing alongisde a cancer that's constantly caught of position, simply cannot pass at the standards of the Top level DM's and doesn't constantly overdribble. i'm cautious about using munich as an example. any other day, we would have lost 6-0, and no one would mention obi doing a few spins and passes DYC., LDN Blue and Tomo

Mikel's performance vs Munich is often hailed as some kind of masterclass. But it really wasn't. Munich were far too dominant to make such a claim. He did well, with a couple strong plays, but it wasn't a great performance. It's not like he shut down any of their players and he wasn't a dominant force in midfield by being a step ahead of his opponents either. Gilvorak 3,734
Matic is a B2B midfielder masquerading as a DM but doesn't offer anywhere enough going forward to play that role so he's pigeonholed there.
Blue_Fox_ 2,086
I've given up on Gilvorak when he claimed Muller wouldn't play in any other top side in europe, so i don't know why are we still arguing about Matic with him. stroey

Hybrid Angel 2,130
I don't get the fuss around the whole 'Matic vs Mikel' debate. Both have different qualities and will be used in different types of games.

At the peak of Matic's time in 2013-14 he was a rock in the midfield and the fact he was settled there doing an adequate job was vital. You want your defensive midfield settled. We had a time where Makelele made that his own position and then Essien did the same. Since Essien we've been juggling with Mikel, Romeu, Van Ginkle and now Matic. You can see how that's working to our detriment. The best two team in the world Bayern & Barca have these positions filled with settled players and you can see them reaping the rewards. Same with Oscar, but apparently juve is a small club around here. Mikel was good today - playing against week opposition but away from home. He was under no pressure when in possession, and kept playing deep in uncontested areas. He did defend well for change though. If mikel were able to do more, over the many years he's been at the club, and against better opposition, Matic wouldn't even be on the squad! what Matic does on the pitch is far more difficult than what Mikel does. That's why Matic is priced in the 25m+ range and Mikel 10m-. (The difference may actually be much greater)
