I was just mentioning the situation in Russia is almost identical. Yes, the lowest of the lowest labour might be less cheap ok, but poverty is a very real thing in Mother Russia as well. Why should English teams be able to spend 50 million on a player but not Chinese clubs? They could have fed a lot of hungry stomachs with the KDB transfer fee as well. It's a complete non argument.

According to these sources. China has about 82,000,000 living in poverty, Russian 22,000,000 and England 13,000,000.

China's population is 1,357,000,000 so that is 6% living in poverty

Russia's population is 143,000,000 so that is 15% living in poverty.

England's population is 53,000,000 so that is 24.5% living in poverty.

This raises the question: which country defines it's poverty the lowest and which country defines their line the highest? I'd wager the people living in poverty in England have more food, clothing and shelter than those living in Russia and China.

Because:

1. Poverty is not a big problem in England.

2. England invented football, basically. Chinese people probably don't give a damn about it, in general.

3. If the situation in Russia is identical, it doesn't make it right.

Of course, these outrageous amounts of money invested in football are a huge general problem, but at least in some contries they are somehow justified as they generate entertainment for people. English people love football, German people love football, Spanish people love football. Chinese people?

The British Empire got rich by sucking all the wealth out of half of the rest of the world. Same goes for the Belgians btw. So yeaaaaaaah, poverty might not be a problem here (I don't agree with that statement btw), but we sure helped keeping Africa and half of Asia poor. :P

Also, every PL match gets broadcasted in China, they're crazy about it, they just don't have a decent league.

You are confusing retaliative poverty, and absolute poverty. There is absolute poverty in China, there is no absolute poverty in the UK. Relative poverty is an utterly useless metric.

There is absolute poverty in every city in the world. Check your local train station at night, for a start.

How is Abramovich's example relevant here?

Well, good for them, but poverty is still a big issue in China. They might have a strong economy, but their political regime doesn't really give too much opportunities to average people. That's why their workforce is so cheap and huge companies exploit people there. A lot of Chinese people really are starving. That's a fact. And now they decide to invest huge amounts of money in a sport that they don't know anything about, in a sport that they don't have tradition in. It would've been understandable to invest in gymnastics, for example. But football? In China? It's really weird.

Starving in China? Obviously you know nuts about China.  Your Wikipedia link doesn't even back that up.  Smacks of euro centric bigotry.

Just because England invented football doesn't give them a monopoly on it. It's the most popular sport in the world, and it's been a long time since England has ruled the game. Maybe the Premier League is the most popular league in the world, but its filled with players from many different countries.

The Chinese love football, they just don't have a quality league. That's the case with most countries around the world. There's other sports in the country that are popular, but to say they don't give a damn about it is completely false.

I wasn't confusing anything; I think you are the one confused by thinking I'm confused.

There's this common misconception with China or Russia. These two nations have their prosperous regions but also their not so prosperous, where you would find poverty. China and Russia are both multi-ethnic states. China isn't just China or Russia isn't just Russia, it's just other autonomous regions such as Tibet, Xinjiang, but with huge populations. Western and Southern China mostly major cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou are prosperous, almost like Japan, Korea. Most Han Chinese places are not "poor". But since China has MASSIVE Eastern provinces such as Xinjiang, TIbet, Qinghai, and some poor Northern provinces, which have little industry and people there are "poor", and it's mostly populations of these provinces that fall under poverty.

Same goes for Russia. It's got rich places such as Moscow, St Petersburg but also poor places like Chechnya and other places in the North Caucasus, where poverty is rife.
