Liquidator 5,176
Lets not forget that Ashley Cole is not black. His father is from Barbados and is black but his mum is English and white. Therefore he is mixed-race, making him no more black than he is white, making Rio's remarks even more childish
pride of lions 59
The BBC make me fucking sick as well with their bullshit PC crusade. They are reporting the Ferdinand incident by having another go at John Terry, they also are pissed off that he got a not guilty.http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18847477
TacticalBlues 2,817
What he said wasn't strictly racist but highly derogatory for sure. Perpetuating such a farcical notion or being "black" or "white" promotes the unconscious racism and such, Ferdinand is just ignorant. As people like Bill Cosby have always argued, the notion of "being black" or "white" is a very dangerous term entailing potentially devastating affects. Signithia Fordham's "School Success: Coping with the "Burden of 'Acting White" is testament to this. The John Amaechi quote eloquently sums it up:"It is the idea that a black person is black only in skin colour but inside they are really white. It's a highly derogatory term. It's a dangerous term because it allows black boys especially but black people in general, to believe that there is a way of being black that is somehow distinct from being white. There are people that think if you don't wear a certain type of clothing or listen to a certain type of music you're not really black. It's a really dangerous thing. There are black boys who do less well in school because they believe by doing well there, they are acting white. To me, this is devastating for black boys and black people everywhere. It's a deeply offensive term with racial connotations."
warnie_666 1,081
One of the comments from the Rio Tweet articles. Sums up why exactly Terry comes out unscathed through everything. It's often said of people that "he's not the brightest, but you'd love him in the trenches next to you". Terry is a person of extremely low intelligence and as a result is lacking, not only in self-awareness, but in awareness of what people think about him. In short, he's blindly ignorant. That's what passes for "uncanny mental strength". You want these people in the trenches with you because they're too stupid to sense danger and so are prone to "heroic" actions - let them lead the charge, I'll be hiding behind them! nullabletype 987
Rio calling Ashley a "choc ice" is offensive on a race level. But not in the same way that a white man hurling the "n-word" at a black man is. "Choc ice" isn't a racist term per se. The sting lies in the fact that he's calling Ashley's racial identity in to question, purely because he took the side of a white man because he believed it to be the right thing to do. The notion that black people and white people should stick together and look after their own (just for the sake of it and not because it's right) is throw back to segregation and not something anybody should aspire to.Rio Ferdinand isn't a hero of mine, and quite clearly the man is a bit thick. But that's all he's guilty of.I can understand why people want him to get in hot water over this. Of course it would be quite ironic (read: hilarious) if after all the stuff he spouted about JT over Twitter throughout this debacle that he, of all people, should end up in a damning race row. But for us to actually want that, that would just make us as bad as all the fans who so often jump on the anti-JT bandwagon, and in this scenario, condemn him of racism, not because it's true or can be proven, but just because they don't like him.So that said, Ashley's representatives have made a statement saying it's nothing and to move on. That's exactly what the fans should do. In reality it doesn't concern us. It has been handled between the parties in question, so let's leave it at that. Dragging it out and witch hunting would only make us as bad as the anti-JT brigade who so vehemently insist in going after our player. Let's try and stay above that.P.S. I don't like the man, but is wobbly lip appropriate? I'm not trying to find racism where it's not, but wobbly lip comes very close to the idea of black folks having big lips. Probably don't want to make things look any worse than they already are.
Laylabelle 9,539
This is just getting pathetic now.Cant blame Ashley for being a witness seeing as he was there!Did what was required of him!Having a go and making snide remarks is pathetic and really its done over.May not been the verdict people/Rio wanted but meh move on!The comment racist or not...doesnt change the fact it was made and he commented on it...Should've just kept quiet really and now all eyes on him at the moment..not exactly what he had in mind Im sure...woopsies! And one minute 'oh it was a sarcastic' reply the next 'its slang'....hmmm
Aesthetic Relic 301
P.S. I don't like the man, but is wobbly lip appropriate? I'm not trying to find racism where it's not, but wobbly lip comes very close to the idea of black folks having big lips. Probably don't want to make things look any worse than they already are.Wobbly lip is very appropriate as he does have a wobbly top lip. Nothing to do with his colour in the slightest. He talks like he's had a stroke and for the record I also recall him being called Daffy Duck due his speach. It's just one of those things people pick up on about a persons feature(s). If you remember "Spitting Image", stars regularly got the piss ripped out of them due to their features, speach impediments, etc....Ferdinand would certainly have his lip movement exaggerated to the extreme. Naked Mole Rat 437
Wouldn't this remark be insulting and somewhat racist because it's implying that Ashley "betrayed" his own race by sucking up to a white man per se? Anyway, I'm incredulous that Ferdinand, even though he's a completely jackass and all, would dare to say such a thing. On the other hand, good on Ashley for sorting it out like any sensible grownup would.
