Mata, in line to make his debut against Cardiff City on Tuesday, is expected to be the only major arrival at Old Trafford in the January window despite their extensive search for new players. United's information is that Luke Shaw, the Southampton left-back, would prefer a move to Chelsea and the club's scouting of Internazionale's Fredy Guarín has left them unsure about exactly how good the midfielder is.

And now Independent is reporting it..

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/transfer-news-manchester-united-face-race-against-time-to-win-luke-shaw-duel-as-chelsea-challenge-for-southampton-star-9086600.html

United are yet to lodge a bid for the 18-year-old left-back and though a move is possible this week, the Premier League champions will need to outbid the west London side substantially if they are to secure the player’s services. Shaw, a Chelsea fan who played at the club’s development centre, is expected to be more open to a move to Stamford Bridge, though United have shown in spending a club record £37m on Juan Mata that they will invest heavily.

So now that the media are making this saga out to be a "war" and a "race" between Chelsea and Man United for Luke Shaw, not only will it be bad enough just missing out on him, but we'll hear "lolololol, Shaw chose United over Chelsea lolololol," endlessly.

Utd vs us on the transfer market is not even a contest. If we want Shaw we will get him, I am confident of that. But we are not in a position where we have to pay 30m for a 18 year old, no matter how talented. Utd are the desperate ones.

If shaw only wants chelsea we won't need to get into a bidding war with united.

Offer something reasonable but not excessive, and he's ours, in my opinion.

Problem with that is, if we offer something "reasonable" like £20m and United go in with something ridiculous, Shaw may look at that offer and say "wow, United are willing to pay that much for me so they must have really big plans for me."

I have a feeling Southampton will take the highest offer and won't care too much about Shaw's wishes.

Didn't United offer more to Southampton regarding Bale? But they sold him to Tottenham anyways.

The sale of Moses,Marin and Ba could be enough to help us fund this move.

£20m is cool.

Yup, 20 mill is about how much we spent on those 3 players, hopefully their values are still similar to what it was when we bought them

3 fringe players for our English starting LB for the next decade? I'm down.
