Rodri will get it and deservedly so.

Deservedly?

I definitely wouldn't go that far. If rumours are true about tonight's winner, it would have come down to the success at the Euros.

I'm still of the mindset that unless it's a WC year, international triumphs shouldn't have a massive bearing.

Yes. Remember when he got red card last season and City lost all 3 games without him? He is by far their most important player. Success with Spain is great bonus. Vini was invisible on Copa for example.

Also it's important to recognize other positions in this awards not only attackers.

Every other candidate would be much more controversial imo.

Also so infantile behavior from Real Madrid. Instead of being happy for Spanish player they act like this.

I'm okay for players other than attackers being recognised, but if we're giving out individual prizes based on "undefeated" records, we may as well do away with it. Cannavaro and Modric earned it after their performances at the World Cups.

Palmer was ranked 24th 😄 and bias aside, is more deserving of this.

Madrid is going to be Madrid. Petulant behaviour is not unusual for them or other renowned Spanish teams. They have CWC duty to prepare for, so that's a timely excuse.

We was named UEFA Men's Player of the Year that year, tbh. The voting system for most of these awards are based on popularity anyway.

Ballon d’Or

  • There appeared to be huge controversy surrounding the winner of the Ballon d’Or. With Vini Jr. widely expected to get the award, news appeared to filter out early on Monday that, in fact, it would be Rodri who would take the accolade. That left Real Madrid furious and meant that Vini Jr, Florentino Pérez, Carlo Ancelotti, Jude Bellingham and any other Real Madrid representatives didn’t fly to Paris for the gala.

  • Spain coach Luis de la Fuente: “It is not good for football that a club like Real Madrid is not present at a gala of this nature.”

  • Toni Kroos: “Rodri will win the Ballon d’Or. I’ve never seen the importance of these individual awards in football, they have no place.”

  • Barcelona’s brilliant Lamine Yamal was the winner of the Kopa Trophy.

  • Lamine Yamal: “I’m proud to receive this trophy. I dedicate this prize to my mother, my grandmother, to the team, the coaches. It's for those who supported me. Visça el Barça y La capital 304.”

  • Rodri: “Lamine Yamal will win the Ballon d’Or very soon, I’m convinced of it.”

  • Hollywood glamour at the Ballon d’Or awards as Natalie Portman posed beside Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsí, Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo [pictures from FC Barcelona]:

  • Real Madrid are named the Men’s Club of the Year at the Ballon d’Or but no one from the club showed up at the ceremony to receive it given their support for Vini Jr.

  • Similarly, Kylian Mbappé was not there to receive the Gerd Müller Trophy for Best Goalscorer 2024, which he shared with Harry Kane - who was present at the ceremony.

  • Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti wins Manager of the Year at the Ballon d’Or awards.

  • Emiliano Martínez wins the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or awards for being Best Goalkeeper of 2024.

  • Aitana Bonmati wins the women’s Ballon d’Or for the second year in succession. It means that a Barça Femeni player has won the award for four years in a row after the successes of Alexia Putellas in 2021 and 2022.

  • Emma Hayes wins Women’s Manager of the Year at the Ballon d’Or awards.

  • Jennifer Hermoso wins the Socrates Award. This is the award given to a player who has done exemplary humanitarian work. Hermoso has been an advocate for women's football and has spoken out against sexual harassment in the game.

  • Man City midfielder, Rodri, is named as the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.

  • Rodri was very emotional after winning the Ballon d’Or: “Thanks for this. It’s a special day for me and all those close to me… I once told my father that I was going to give up playing football but he said “keep going, try until the end.” Today, I’m very proud.”
