I cannot think of any other sport that judges it like football. Goaltending (and not just the banning of blocking a downward travelling ball) in basketball (the cylinder of the basket extended up) is along the same lines, BUT it is not out of bounds and it it necessary as well, as otherwise players would just swat away every shot inside the rim's cylinder, and thus ruin the game.
