TheOneChan95 225
True he is probably no leader. On the one hand I fear what will happen to us when we get in trouble and have no real, natural leader on the pitch. on the other hand I have seen the German NT often enough to see that leadership might be a tad overrated in football. The last generation of GErman football had a bunch of true, natural leaders such as Torsten Frings, Arne FRiedrich, Bernd Schneider, Oliver Kahn and most importantly Michael Ballack. I have in person and his character literally enhances the impression his anyway imposing appearances gives you. He is very cheerful and friendly but at the same time demanding and will always get the best out of you. The current generations is full of cunts and pussies like Neuer, Lahm, Schwein, Özil, Boateng. Still they have finally won that elusive World Cup. Ok the opposition they faced was not on the same level as Spain of 2008-2012. Still they knew what they had to do. All players in the team were technically and tactically perfectly educated to play the football they needed. No one was required to make the one-man-army show players like Ballack, Drogba or Lampard did so often. Some people like Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Hummels took more responsibility than others. But there is no way those are the natural born leaders of old. When the team has developed enough of coherence, it suffices when everyone steps up to motivate each other in the most crucial of times which is exactly what leaders do.The doubt whether Cahill is enough of a leader to take that bit more of responsibility remains. Iva might be a more obvious choice. Wow good point. Come to think of it, the other 2 recent WC winners had keepers as their captains. Perhaps they may have been big personalities but they couldn't influence the play the way someone like Ballack or Cafu can. So perhaps you are right that leadership is overrated. However I still think that the captaincy should go to the most reliable player so I think that someone like Azpi or Brana should get it over Cahill. Tomo 21,751
Without leadership we wouldn't have won the CL.Without Cech we wouldnt have, Munich was the one sided final ever, that victory was remarkable. The player's played their hearts out but we were comprehensively outplayed by a vastly superior team.Cech single handedly prevented a thumping. robdog 2,084
IMHO the previous posts stating GC doesn't leadership skills is a bit unfair. If you watch CFC or England play, you can see GC giving orders to keep the backline straight. Also GC was the Captain of Bolton. I heard he was always the first on the practice pitch & the last one to leave. GC has done some damn good things playing in the Royal Blue. Joker10 946
I would have Ivan, Matic, Diego and even Azpi and Tibo as captain before Cahill is even in my thought process.I like him but he simply isn't captain material. Some intresting choices. What differentiate Azpi from Cahill in your mind? First thing i think of both players is their passion and puting their body on the line for the team. I easily think Cahill has better social skills and presence in the locker room. Cahill comes off as a bigger presence then Azpi, i don't see Azpi as a leader.Ivanovic? too much of a hot head imo, not calm and collected for my preference. Too many bonehead occasions for Iva and don't think he is one to defuse situations when needed.t iseah100

Courtois? A 22 year old who has only started playing in our team from August and has not even completed the season here yet. Now that is stretching it. He might not be the leader some people want but I would rather see him as captain over most of the names you mentioned in that list. Especially Courtois. robdog and iseah100
Joker10 946
For me Costa and Matic would top my list to succeed Terry as Captain. 2-4 years from now, i think Oscar could also be another contender.

(also he has weaknesses in his defending, which wouldn't be acceptable for our captain) Amblève.

Fernando 6,585
I think he's the weak link in our defense. Guy ain't that good. So we will have a problem when Terry gone because he ain't world class.
