DYC. 7,542
When we beat Valencia 3-0 last season Mata was jointly with Drogba our best player on the night. Made 2 assists, with the last 1 a brilliant through ball for the Drog. He was man of the match for sure IMO with Drogba, absolutely bossed that gameI have to say, I don't remember him being great that match but I'll take your word for it. He'll need to perform like that more often then. There's a reason why it's mostly Chelsea fans who rate Mata very highly.
DYC. 7,542
Mata is very good in big games...Never said Mata wasn't good in big games. I said he needs to put in top performances in big games to be ranked among the best. There's a big difference.
Superblue 6,372
Mehh Mata wasn't great in big games imo. He was good in a few but never shone (as in the overall performance) imo and that's what I was referring to. Think Drogba vs Valencia or Iniesta vs Real in the Super Copa (first leg). What has to be considered last season is:First season in English football.Playing in a very under-performing side.It was clear to anyone that restricting Mata made a huge hole in our general play. The big teams looked to neutralize him, yet he still contributed goals and assists in the big games, and teams concentrating on him opened up space for others last season.Taking all of the above into account, I firmly expect him to perform to an even higher standard this season. Having a trio of Oscar, Hazard and Mata (not to mention the likes of Marin, Moses and Sturridge also) gives us so many dangerous options it is impossible for a team to concentrate or try to man mark anybody because the others will make the most of the space left behind. It is also going to be hugely rare that none of the above can create a performance of game winning quality. No longer carrying the burden, Mata will flourish this season. Which is why I said it's the next step for him as a player. He's already exceeded my expectations of him when he signed.Never expected him to be such a key player. I think many other fans of other teams realize how good of a player Mata is. That is poor statement to make if you only think it is Chelsea fans. Every club supporter knows Mata is talented and him missing out on the Spain squad is nothing to be ashamed of because his form recently has been nothing short of brilliant
meetdoscar 335
Mata is a big game player even almost if not as much as Drogba or second only to drogba since his arrival I don't know where this talk of mata not being a big game player is coming from. Get the chelsea DVD for last season to clear your doubts

That is poor statement to make if you only think it is Chelsea fans. Every club supporter knows Mata is talented and him missing out on the Spain squad is nothing to be ashamed of because his form recently has been nothing short of brilliantIn a way to be honest I agree with DYC. I've always felt within England that Mata is seen as a 'poor man's Silva'. The huge media lovefest for Cazorla has also put Mata in the shade somewhat. However, Mata's statistics compare very well with Silva during his time in the Premiership and although Cazorla has started well, he still has to show those levels of consistency throughout the entire season and is a couple of years older than Mata.I also feel that with the summer signings Chelsea made (particularly Hazard and Oscar) that Mata has slipped under the radar somewhat within the English media.I'm not complaining. As Chelsea fans, we all know how good Mata was last season, how well he's started this season, and potentially how good he can become over his Chelsea career. He is still the key attacking player in our side IMO. If others can't appreciate this fully then who cares if Mata is helping us to our share of trophies. And that Mata isn't all that. I just laugh when I hear that but it's sad he's not rated highly (enough) in general. Not that it has an effect on my own opinion of him. Jase 43,479
Cazorla is getting more attention because he's a big fish in a small pond. Mata is a big fish in a big pond.Only probable reason that Mata isn't getting the attention is because he's playing for 'Chelsea FC' and we all know what the media thinks of us. Had he been playing for Arsenal, Man United, Man City, Spurs or heck even Liverpool, they will be talking non-stop about Mata right now. I mean really, the wankfest over Cazorla is just ridiculous. It's like they have never seen a player of his ilk before in England. Bet those media in Spain must be laughing at the idiocy of the English media. Tomo 21,751
Mata's 'done a Drogba' this season. We signed Hazard and Oscar and we thought the days of Mata being our best player were over, but he has proved us wrong in the best way, with performances on the pitch. Buffalo talks Blue 85
We signed Hazard and Oscar and we thought the days of Mata being our best player were overI don't think I thought that way. Buying Mata was never a mistake. This guy is full of talent. And the amazing skills he has with the ball is outstanding!Hazard and Oscar are great too but Mata's awesome capability can never be overtaken

And the amazing skills he has with the ball is outstanding!Hazard and Oscar are great too but Mata's awesome capability can never be overtaken I never said it was a mistake far from it what i meant was last season Mata was the driving force in everything we did good when Eden and Oscar came i think the general consensus is that he was set to take a bit of a back seat and in the first few games it looked that way. Since his break tho Mata has roared back to even better form than he was last season. He's like the mate you spend less time with when someone "new and flash" comes along but eventually your realize that he is the best mate.
