Rare to see a player in his prime moving down a level of this is true. I guess it makes sense for him since he was in Germany before and will be a considered much more important there than he is here. Things are sounding more positive with Rüdiger and he is much more important to keep. Christensen out, Koundé in to replace him, and Toni staying would be an excellent outcome for us. And a definite upgrade.

Spuds were dogshit tonight so it didn’t matter, but City will be licking their chops watching that. I pray that it’s because we just went into cruise control after the goal and weren’t as focused since we knew we were through. Because the number of times they were clean through the middle barreling towards our goal is concerning. Kane looks like he’s lost several yards of pace so he couldn’t sprint away from our defenders consistently. If Son were playing today I think they’d have scored on a couple of those breakaways. And City this weekend will be much less wasteful.

You would hope that when we switch back to more high stakes PL matches these lazy mistakes will be less frequent. Some of our players just looked bored and tried to be too cute with the ball.

Completely dominant and comfortable for 95% of that half but literally every single dangerous moment Spuds had was self induced. So many sloppy, lazy passes from defenders and midfielders. City will ruthlessly punish us for those.

The Spuds team is straight up trash. Unless we are sleepwalking and acting unprofessional (“we’re 2-0 up and already through) we should be winning this comfortably. The pace of Lucas and the finishing of Kane are dangers, but we can negate most of that by keeping the ball away from them like we did the first leg.

Could work against this absolutely SHIT Spuds defense. As long as they get service from the midfield.

Kenedy is a shocking player. Not even a PL standard footballer, nevermind Chelsea quality. The very definition of a headless chicken player.

The fact that none of the big clubs in the PL are doing much is evidence that it’s just much more difficult these days to pull of significant signings in January. You would’ve thought clubs like United, Arse, Spuds, etc who are in a knife fight for 4th would be super active trying to put themselves in pole position. But none of them are really doing anything at the moment. Liverpool lost Mané and Salah to AFCON and haven’t done anything. Unless you can target a top player whose contract expires this summer and can pay now to get him early the options are basically nonexistent. The fact that we were interested in Digne but wouldn’t even pay the £23m required to sign him tells you what the clubs’ budget is. They want a super cheap stopgap. So it’s Emerson or a loan for someone else.

Honestly, if I were in Emerson’s shoes I’d be saying fuck off. You chose Alonslow over me as LWB cover and are only coming back in for me because you’re desperate. But it feels like amateur hour stuff if Tuchel really wants him back and we’re now 2 weeks into the window and he isn’t here yet.

It’s going to be Emerson coming back right near the deadline. And while it’ll be nice to have the extra body and option to relieve the load on Alonso, I’m not sure Emerson actually helps us at all quality wise. He’ll basically just be coming back so that we don’t have to play CHO or CP there anymore. Which I guess is a positive. As Tuchel has alluded to in his presser, there really aren’t many Chelsea quality players available in January. Players who fit that profile are likely already at top clubs and will cost a massive fortune considering their importance to their teams. Only on rare occasions will a £50m+ player move in the Jan window.

Everton want Digne out permanently which we won’t do and I’ve seen quotes from both Dest and Theo Hernandez in recent days saying they want to stay where they are. So unless we think outside of the box (like perhaps Adama brought in as a wingback like Conte wants to do) it looks like there aren’t really any deals to be made in January.

Don’t think Dias has been nearly as good as he was last season. And even Liverpool fans have been slating TAA a bunch this year.

Saul for me competes with Jorginho for that “get the ball and quickly recycle it” role. I don’t think he’d necessarily block Gallagher who I see as competition for Mount in the more advanced midfield role where he can attack the box and score. So it’s more likely Billy that Saul directly competes with when we decide if he stays or not. Highly unlikely that he does stay, but I wouldn’t be totally against it if he does as long as he steadily improves. And yes, I do kind of find myself wincing a bit when I see him about to make a tackle. 😂 As @Jase mentioned above, several times in the past week he basically goes sprinting in like a madman and slide tackles people. Needs to calm tf down, lol.

What I don’t get it the seeming lack of urgency. This is an extremely packed month of fixtures and we’re already resorting to playing attackers like CP and CHO in these areas and yesterday a 17 year old kid. By the time we might get someone in the need may not even be as great as it is currently. With two huge matches against Spuds and one against City coming up in rapid succession is Alonso going to start all those? All with Mendy out and the constant question mark of positive COVID tests? That’s just asking for us to concede for fun. Clearly it’s not as simple as us supporters think, but surely the moment the club were aware of the severity of Chilly’s injury plans were starting to be put in place for a new body at LWB. That injury happened a month and a half ago and we’re now nearly 2 weeks into January with no signs at all that we’re close to a signing. It’s like they were caught off guard by Lyon refusing to let Emerson come back and are now scrambling.

Until about an hour ago I didn’t even realize just how low down on the totem pole Chesterfield are. I figured they were in League One at worst. They are in the FIFTH tier? Jeez. I’d be slightly disappointed if we don’t score 8 today with the team we put out.

Tbf, the likes of Lukaku, Werner, Saul, Ziyech etc don’t have that many minutes in their legs lately. Letting them build up a bit of rhythm can only do them good. Even better if Timo and Rom can see the ball go in the net.
