At the moment, we cannot compete with both Manchester clubs, we cannot compete with the top european flight. We don't have a big enough squad, a good enough squad and we have to many young players. So, at some extent, we are where we belong to. Yes, the way it gone hurts, but still. So now you tell me Roberto gets sacked because he cannot make us better than what we actually are ? Yes, I also blame him for our bad patch, because he hasn't done enough about the game tactics. But hey yo ! Because of who we didn't buy a striker in the summer ? Who decided to let go Malouda (he's still there, but not really, you know), Essien, Hipster Meireles, without replace them (I do not even talk in number, but in experience) ? Against Arsenal, Ramires - if my mind corners' aren't too dusty - set him up in a counter-attack, which could, and should, have led to a goal opportunity. Instead of a goal occasion, it led to a face-palm moment : he hit the ball with his back-heel, and the counter-attack was dead. It didn't happen once, but twice. I could go on with such examples ; though it's so frustrating that I'd rather not remind them. And on top of that, if he doesn't do the right calls, isn't in the team's flow, no wonder he receives nothing.

In 2009-10, when Lampard started to be on the wane (despite his goal record, he wasn't that good compared to his best level), Didier was the best goalscorer in the league with 29 goals and managed to have 10 assists ; and he was voted the best player of the FA Cup final, a final where he scored to only goal and allowed us to win it. In 2011-12, while Lampard was busy in having a cat fight with Boas, Drogba was faboulous in the Champions League, scored the first goal in the FA Cup semi-final, and then scored the winning goal (as far as my memory goes) in the FA Cup final. During our two most successfull seasons - i.e. the double EPL/FA Cup, and the double UCL/FA Cup -, Drogba was our better player (at least into my eyes), and he played a major part in our success. So you see, with the same arguments you are using to "write off" (it isn't the best word, though I cannot find better right now) Drogba, I can use them to "write off" Lampard in Drogba's favor. Both players have been pivotal for Chelsea, at different times. It happened that Drogba was pivotal in our most successful season(s), that must be the reason for which he has been voted as the greatest. I do not know how comes he's criticized for his mistakes while Terry and Cahill are getting away with it. Don't get me wrong, into my eyes his mistakes are a genuine concern and all, but into my book, the two english are as mistake-prone as him, if not more. The first part of your post is true, but the second part isn't. Yes, last year he was more effective when he was playing in the middle of the park. But does it make him a CM ? Not necessarily. We have to see the bigger picture and ask ourselves "why did he was more effective in a CM role than at a winger role ?" First of all, we have to keep in mind one fact : last year, he was the only player, at our disposal, who was able to create thing, to build the game. This fact could be very deceiving on our perception of him, deceiving on his stats. Indeed, in term of creativity/technical, he was the big fish in the small pond ; it could have make him look better than he was. I mean, if had a good amount of assists, this is also due to the fact that he had to do more than his normal job, since he was the only one able to make assists on a regular basis. So, despite not being his role, he was the player we were relying on the make things happen, to build the game. Thus no wonder he was more effective when playing through the middle : he was having more impact on the game ; while on the wing he was being isolated and couldn't weight on the game building. So, was he more effectif in a CM role than on the wing ? Yes. Does it make him a CM ? No, it was only a part-time job. And now we have more players in term of creativity, technic (Marin, Hazard, Oscar), we will that he isn't a great CM, that there are better players for this job, and that his real position is on the wing.

I am neither talking about some promising signs that he can turn out to be good anew in an uncertain future. No, I am talking about genuine world-class performances, or not far away of that level.

As I said in a post in this topic some days ago, to say he will be good in a double pivot is a misconception of his role, and putting him in the midfield-two will take away from him all his qualities. First of all, people who say he will be good in the double pivot, seem to base their opinion on the fact that Oscar comes deep to take the ball when Brazil has the possession of the ball. This is where his role is misinterpreted. With this kind of logic, Messi would be an excellent central midfielder. From what I have seen of him, Oscar has the brain of the playmaker, he is always looking to build the play, to provide his team mates. As a consequence you will see him roaming all over the pitch, in order to make the game ticking. That's why sometimes you can see him on the wings, or deep in the midfield. Furthermore, if he does look good when he comes deep, it isn't because he has the attributes to be a deep-lying playmaker. No, this is because he doesn't have the constraints of this kind of players, i.e. he doesn't have a player to follow and chase him. And, if an opponent was to chase him deep in the midfield, it would create spaces in the opposition's defense (because it would mean that Oscar drifts out of position, and thus the player chasing him down would also leave his position). On the second hand, if we play him in the double pivot, we would waste his main attributes. Because a role in a double-pivot means a lot of coercions. The deep-lying playmaker has to stay deep ; he has to provide an important work rate to accomplish ; he hasn't a great liberty of movement. Therefore, he won't be able to roam all over the pitch as he seems to do at the moment. Once you have tied him up with significant defensive duties, and have limited the area where he can play, what remains ? Nothing special, in my point of view. And finally, despite doing some tackles every now and then, I cannot see him being good enough in defense to be there, or at least not now. And even if he was decent at defense, it would still hinder his best qualities... No, into my eyes, we should play him in front of two defensive-minded midfielders. This way, he would have less defensive efforts to give, and thus he could focus more on building the game.

Some weeks ago, I desperately wanted us to buy a world-class striker. But I've come to reason : our midfield is crying out for a deep-lying playmaker. The midfield battle is the most important thing in football, into my eyes. Whatever the quality of your strikers, whatever the quality of your defenders, if you don't win the midfield battle, you will struggle to score goals and to have a rock solid defense. If your midfield isn't good enough : your defenders will be exposed and thus the back-four will be vulnerable ; your forwards won't be feeded efficiently and thus your attack will be toothless. At the moment, considering the setup we play in (i.e. the 4-2-3-1), we don't have what is required to have a double-pivot good enough. Therefore, if we plan to continue to play in this formation, we have to buy a deep-lying playmaker. If we don't, I can picture the season to be very, very long. And if we don't buy this kind of player, the only solution to have a good midfield is to ditch the 4-2-3-1 in order to play in a setup allowing us to play a playmaker (that we already have into our squad) in the midfield (4-3-3 springs to mind).

I get the feeling this is a PR buy. Of course the addition of a player like Van Persie will improve their squad, but he will be redundant and, it seems to be a luxury purchase since Manchester United has already quality strikers. But, their economic situation tends to get worse (or at least, it doesn't get better). Their owners are hated, among ManU fans, because of this. They are even more hated now that they stole half of the money that United got from the bourse. So I suspect that this buy is like a gift to calm down the fans (a bit in the same fashion of what Ferguson did some weeks ago, i.e. telling to medias that the Glazers were great owners). And also to show that they are still a force on the transfert market and can attract world class players/talents (especially after Hazard and Lucas turned them down).

Because, under the portuguesh, the players were playing with the aim the get their manager to get sacked ; under RDM, the players played to redeem themselves towards the fan, to prove they were right to sack their coach, and to win the CL. For an unknow reason he passes under the radar. He needs to be phased out and should only start the odd games. The situation becomes more and more to look-a-like with what happens at Loserpool and Carragher. We need to prepare the future and try out to sttle the Cahill partnership, and it this partnership doesn't work out greatly, we should and try with Bruma (Kalas might be a bit too young) or with a very good CB we would buy (the proposition of DYC about Hummels is sweet).
