It'll need a change in the law and I can't see Parliament getting around to it, even if a majority of MPs would be in favour, which is questionable.

Personally I'm against it but I recognise that this puts me in the minority.

Used to love the terraces back in the day. White Wall and the middle of the Shed. Not against standing per say but at my age and my back it's a no no for me.

But it doesnt need a change in the law

5. The legalities - what has to change?

  • It is unclear whether a change in the law is required to introduce rail-seated safe standing areas into the Premier League or Championship. Many fans believe ‘persistent standing’ is illegal but this is not the case. The law only dictates that clubs should provide seats for all supporters, not that supporters must sit on them. The point is confirmed by the DCMS: “At no point has it been

the terraces were so much better atmosphere..it`s mad to think that probably atleast 50% of TalkChelsea have never stood on a terrace.

we used to get away with a lot when we could lose ourselves in the mass of bodies..the Shed end has lost it`s soul since they seated it.

Was a White Waller myself. Loved it but, for me, standing ramps up the testosterone levels. Outright hooliganism, racism and other assorted misbehaviour blighted our game for more than two decades and I don't think we are completely out of the woods yet. I'm not especially worried about violence in the ground, I think modern systems could help clubs keep a lid on that, but I am concerned about people returning to the excitable days.

The ugly atmosphere that often surrounded football in the bad old days was horrible to live through and it emptied grounds all over the country. Each and ever one of the measures which were introduced as counter measures were opposed by fan groups and football people but every one has worked well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I agree with all of this but I'm still not in favour.

On the atmosphere, it's been an issue for our club for decades. People used to say the reason The Bridge lacked passion was because the terracing was so far from the pitch. I never bought that argument and I don't believe that the hope of improving atmosphere is a good enough reason to bring standing back.

Theres also a civil law. whereas the goverment only states there should be a seat for everyone theres no law that says we have to sit down.

And I'm sure theres plenty of others that have seen like me our over zealous stewards over using their powers in telling people to sit down. And people having received letters from the club warning them to do so.

I know of mates that never sit down at their grounds.

It'll be close to 65k. 2 Bridges, 1 to West Brompton and 1 to the back of Fulham Broadway. They will lower the ground. Wembley is looking the most likely temp ground.

How many seasons away est?

Sounds like we're gonna use the 50k loophole then.

Yes lower the ground, not the capacity. The actual ground....into the ground.

This would look really decent and also a good overall solution. The nearby buildings and lanes would not be impeded + the iconic Stamford Bridge Stands and facade would be retained. Lowering the ground is a common practice when a stadium gets build. Olympiastadion Berlin, Camp Nou, Bernabeu and many more have a lowered pitch. Lets hope there is not a forgotten tube tunnel below. Though I wonder how the stands would evolve given a lowered ground. they are already pretty close to the pitch. where shall the new lower stands fit?

So lower the pitch only?

if the pitch is lowered to below street level ( ala the bernabau )then that is one restriction covered i.e. height of buildings in that area.

All 4 stands will then have to be knocked down unless the architects have come up with an ingenius plan to keep one of them i.e. the west stand and construct beneath it.

Find out next week at the conference/meeting the club are holding what ideas they have in mind.

No one on this site knows for sure and its all speculation meantime

I think you will find they will lower and turn the pitch a degree or 5, the whole stadium as is would be flattened, the only part worth saving is the west and even then id reclad it if that were the case.
