Chelsea line up Sergio Aguero with £38m plus Deco bid for the Atletico Madrid star

Chelsea are believed to be ready to offer £38million plus Deco for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero.

The Blues will argue that the bid meets the Argentina star's buyout clause, which stands at about £51m plus taxes.

Manchester United are also keen on the 21-year-old, but both clubs would insist on driving down his £200,000 a week pay demands.

Chelsea have targeted Aguero as part of a three-pronged assault on the transfer market that includes interest in Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery and AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo.

Owner Roman Abramovich has promised a £100m budget after persuading captain John Terry to shun Manchester City because he still has big plans for the club.

Aguero is considered one of the brightest prospects in world football and is a long-term target of both Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Atletico have tied Diego Forlan to the club despite widespread interest in the former Manchester United, but will find holding on to his strike partner increasingly difficult.

Former Barcelona playmaker Deco is likely to welcome a move back to Spain after struggling in his debut season and criticising the club. Inter Milan have shown interest but failed to meet the asking price.

Chelsea would also be prepared to offer Claudio Pizarro to the Spaniards if they wanted top replace a striker with a striker, but the Peru international is more likely to be part of a deal to take Pirlo to Stamford Bridge.

Landing Ribery will be difficult, with reports last week that Bayern had already rejected a £68m bid for a player they see as being on a par with Real Madrid's £80m Cristiano Ronaldo.

But their chances of signing the France star have increased with Real Madrid general director Jorge Valdano insisting their summer spending had ended with the capture of Xabi Alonso from Liverpool for £30m.
