Arsenal have agreed personal terms with Noni Madueke as they consider making an approach to Chelsea for the winger.

Madueke, 23, has given his green light to the move but there have been no club-to-club talks yet.

Arsenal have good relations with Chelsea and have already done business with them this summer, with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga joining Mikel Arteta’s side after the north London side triggered his £5million ($6.8m) release clause.

Madueke is of interest to Arsenal as they weigh up options to provide depth on the right wing, while the England international is also capable of operating on the opposite flank.

The Athletic reported on July 1 that Madueke was one of the options being considered by Arsenal as they searched for a versatile attacking player to add to Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer, with Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze and Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers also under consideration.

Madueke has made 45 appearances for Chelsea this season, including four at the Club World Cup in the United States.

He scored 11 goals and added five assists despite missing time with a hamstring injury and Enzo Maresca twice opting to leave him out of his matchday squad. Madueke was dropped for the 3-0 win over Aston Villa in December over his apparent performances in training. He was also omitted from the defeat by Fulham later that month in what Maresca called a “technical decision”.

Madueke joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and has gone on to appear in 91 matches for the club. His contract runs until 2030.

He previously represented Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace at youth level before joining PSV on a three-year deal in 2018 and later extending his contract with the Dutch side. Due to the age he left for the Netherlands (16), Madueke does not count as homegrown in England for the purposes of Premier League and UEFA squad regulations.

Madueke was first called up to the England senior squad in August 2024 and has gone on to win seven caps. He was previously a regular at youth level.

Chelsea have made significant additions in attacking areas this summer with Liam Delap arriving for £30m from Ipswich Town, Joao Pedro joining from Brighton & Hove Albion for in a deal in excess of £50m and Jamie Gittens signing from Borussia Dortmund for an initial fee of £48.5m plus £3.5m in potential add-ons.

Analysis

By Chelsea correspondent Liam Twomey

Madueke has been a reasonably productive winger for Chelsea since arriving from PSV, without ever establishing himself as an indispensable starter.

His aggression in taking on his defender in 1v1 situations has been valued by Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca. He also has excellent chemistry with Cole Palmer, his old friend and team-mate in England’s various youth age groups. That was best demonstrated by the high point of his Chelsea career: a 14-minute hat-trick against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux last season.

Madueke always carries himself as if he believes he is the best player on the pitch. At times, that ironclad self-belief is a real asset to his team, but not always.

Repeated attempts to take penalty duties marred his season under Pochettino, and most Chelsea supporters will have noticed that he rarely tries to hide his annoyance when substituted. Pochettino also publicly challenged Madueke to be better in training, while Maresca made what he referred to as a “technical decision” to drop him last season.

Chelsea are increasingly well stocked on the right flank. Pedro Neto has quickly blossomed into Maresca’s favoured starter on that side and the prodigiously talented Estevao will need room to grow. Tyrique George can also play on the right and Geovany Quenda is arriving from Sporting CP in the summer of 2026.

It is not hard to see why Chelsea might be prepared to let Madueke go, particularly since this week’s negotiated settlement with UEFA underlined the club’s need to sell as well as buy. But there is also a long-standing belief at Stamford Bridge that he has proven himself a better and more valuable player than he was two and a half years ago, so the price will be important.

Emergency Broadcast: Jamie Gittens joins Chelsea

https://scoutedftbl.com/jamie-gittens-Chelsea-transfer-analysis/?ref=notebook-newsletter

We all knew it was coming: Jamie Gittens has joined Chelsea.

We’re sure the big names in media will be all over this one, but felt there was space for some trademark SCOUTED nuance, too. So, with a blend of data and Ashwin and Jake’s colossal brainpower, here’s our take on a long-time favourite joining the Premier League.

Who is Jamie Gittens?

Tom Curren

You know the name. Raised at Manchester City, handcrafted into one of Europe's most exciting attacking talents at Borussia Dortmund, the subject of much hope with England's youth teams and now the object of a big-money move to a leading Premier League club - Jadon Sancho has come a long way.

I'm just kidding, we know who Jamie Gittens is - last year he came 7th in SCOUTED50. But the fact Gittens is arriving to essentially replace Sancho at Chelsea is too poetic not to point at.

https_3a_2f_2fsubstack-post-media-s3-ama

I'll hand things over to the smart lads to do actual analysis.

What kind of player is Jamie Gittens?

Ashwin Raman

Jamie Gittens’ natural residence is the touchline. While he seemed less comfortable as an inside forward in Niko Kovacs’ 3-4-3, Gittens is a great fit for a system that requires the left-winger to get chalk on their boots. He’ll pick the ball up out wide…

1-3.png via The Analyst

…and run up the pitch with the ball, causing chaos and unsettling defences with his speed and dribbling ability. His ability to draw defenders to himself with the ball at his feet – or his dribbling gravity – is a valuable skill that helps sides in a way that isn’t easily captured with stats. As @sthsthburner on Twitter remarked, Gittens finds ways to ‘split’ two or more defenders when they swarm him near the touchline, even though his execution remains ‘fairly shaky’.

After beating a player or two off the dribble, Gittens is a high-volume shot creator. He’ll get to the byline and try to send in a cutback…

2-3.png

…or cut inside and shoot from the wide areas of the box.

3-4.png

Of course, as you can see, his trigger-happy shot-making style means that his shots aren’t very high-quality ones. His xG/shot was just 0.07 (in the 15th percentile for Bundesliga forwards) and only put up 0.18 xG p90 and 0.13 xA p90, which are way below par for Bundesliga wingers and attacking midfielders. His 8 goals last season came from a whopping 122% xG overperformance, which is highly unsustainable for any attacker in the world, and should not be viewed as an indicator of his goal threat.

At the same time, his gung-ho attacking approach must be considered within the context of his team context. Under Nuri Sahin, when Gittens was tasked with sticking close to the touchline, Dortmund weren’t the greatest attacking side, which meant Gittens needed to constantly create shots out of nothing. Moreover, his off-ball activity offers some hope for improvements in his goal threat, even though his ‘end product’ appears to have a clear ceiling.

What does the data say about Jamie Gittens?

Jake Entwistle

As Ash as alluded to, Jamie Gittens is an extreme dribbler. Whether it be Carries or Take-Ons, bringing the ball towards the opposition goal with the ball at his feet is his superpower and his calling card.

From a pool of 1,528 outfield players with 810+ minutes across Europe’s Big Five Leagues in 2024/25, Gittens ranked first for Percentage of Touches as Take-On Attempts. Almost every fifth action is an Attempted Take-On. You don’t often see another player ranked above Jérémy Doku in these lists.

4-4.png

Gittens was also one of 20 players in that same pool to average at least 2.8 Carries into the Final Third and 2.8 Carries into the Penalty Area per 90. From that list, only Doku - now back at the top - and Lamine Yamal had more Attempted Take-Ons per 90.

5-3.png

Gittens, though, ranked first for Shot-Creating Actions via Take-Ons, leading a group of just four players to average at least one SCA via Take-On per 90. Gittens generates twice as many as Doku.

6-2.png

When sorting that same group by the Percentage of their SCA created via Take-Ons, Gittens is a massive outlier. He is the only player in this list with a dependency (better word?) above 30%… and he’s pushing 40%.

7-2.png

But you can’t really argue with his choice. Of the 259 players to attempt 3+ Take-Ons per 90 in our dataset, Gittens ranks 6th for his ability to convert them into SCA via Take-Ons - 17% of his Attempted Take-Ons lead to a Shot-Creating Action via Take-On. For context, Doku is at 6.47%.

8-2.png

It’s also worth emphasising that Gittens attempts the most Take-Ons per 90 in this group and is one of six to attempt 5+ per 90 alongside Vinicius Júnior, Jamal Musiala, Mattia Felici, Kingsley Coman and Raúl Moro. Through that lens, only Coman is more efficient.

💥
Also, did you notice? The Gamebreakers start to appear when you look at efficiency and volume in tandem: Mohamed Salah and Evan Guessand both feature in this list.

Basically, Jamie Gittens is an extreme Roadrunner Archetype in both style and substance. If you have no intention to lean into this, he is not the winger for you. Platform him correctly, you have a carry-first cheat code. Explore the scatter plot below to discover more.

How will Jamie Gittens fit in at Chelsea?

Ashwin Raman

Wingers have a large role to play in Chelsea’s system. Much of Enzo Maresca’s attacking tactics against low blocks comes down to positioning wingers near the touchline to stretch defences and tasking them with ball-carrying and creating shots out of thin air. As we’ve discussed earlier, few young wingers are as adept at dribbling past defenders and creating shots off the dribble — albeit often low-quality — which makes Gittens a great fit for Maresca’s tactical approach.

Chelsea-Gittens-1.png

Another consideration is Chelsea’s attacking dynamic down the left is the left-winger’s positioning in relation to the starting left-back, Marc Cucurella. The Spaniard is tasked with dropping deep to form a back three, inverting into midfield, or making attacking overlapping and underlapping runs based on the situation. This works best with a winger who’s comfortable at both staying close to the touchline as well as cutting inside and making runs in the channels, and Gittens certainly fits the bill.

Chelsea-Gittens-2-1.png

With Chelsea seeming set to add João Pedro to their attacking arsenal, Maresca is likely to rotate the quintet making up his forward line. But Gittens seems likely to start across a variety of contexts, as he’s Chelsea’s only true touchline specialist on the left and his skillset serves the side well on the transition and against low blocks. Nevertheless, Maresca is unlikely to start five forwards, and Gittens may be the one relegated to the bench to fit in João Pedro against tougher opposition.

Noni to Arsenal news is reaching boiling point. Not a chance this doesnt go through now. Hopefully we get somewhere in the ball park of 42-60 mil.

If Kudus/Fofana come in - I'd like to see a few players go before we lock up a CB option.

Djordje - 22 mil

Humphrys/Kepa - 20 mil

Noni - 45 mil

Badi - 20 mil

KDH - 25 mil

Nkunku - 30 mil

Sterling - 15 mil

Jackson - 40 mil

Felix - 30 mil

Disasi - 20 mil

Ugo - 25 mil

Good luck getting 15 for Sterling, 30 for Felix, 20 for Disaster and 25 for Ugo.

The only hope with those players is another round of loan deals (with decent loan fee).

The Nwaneri noises also really excite me, he's a top player that kid

There's no way Arsenal would allow him to leave, especially not to us.

I think your way off here and underestimate how things can work especially as it looks like one of ours is off to Arsenal. Like reported yesterday we will have asked about him knowing his current contract situation, and he will be looking at this situation knowing he is behind Saka and now Madueke and we can offer him a huge contract with hugely improved wages....Him and Kudus will be right in our vision now and it will be who we move for
