Fernando 6,585
14 minutes ago, robsblubot said: That was on Maresca. Club probably assumed the manager knew the player well enough. Yes because most of us here always say, the manager is supposed to get his player. All the way back from Mourinho. And we have seen time and time that it can be a hit and miss. Altough Mourinho mark 1 did good but after that Mourinho has been woeful. Carlo for the desire in Torres, Conte buys etc etc. A lot of these are awesome managers but had woeful calls in buying players. So because of taking all these example I'm leaning that we are doing the right model, not rely on a manager input to buy players but the directors as a team should do that. Of course you have exceptions when you amazing talent in coaching like United had with SAF and currently City with Pep. But those type of managers are rare, we hardly get to see these types of managers coming left and right. Hence the wise choice is how Chelsea is being set up with scouts, directors and what not. The only department we are lacking is a transfer guru for defense. We are good at other parts, but defense we need a better transfer director for that. robsblubot and mkh

I thought people were skeptical of managers having as much control on players particularly after this ownership group and the Todd Boehly/Thomas Tuchel transfer window? Am pretty sure every coach since has had their influence on signings restricted to a degree. Probably consulted but doubtful they get final say. Another pointless signing though. To go with several pointless/underwhelming level of quality under the sporting director pairing. Disasi, Mudryk, KDH, Jorgensen, Washington, Tosin, Kellyman…. Just to name a few. Yes, I was not referring to what I find optimal, but what I thought happened. Still, we are talking about a single signing here, not 5 players asked by Maresca, afaik. So, the club probably trusted the manager given that he supposed to know the player well. Caveat for me is always that he was not playing PL. I personally find Lavia pretty meh so far, but it's too soon to pass judgement given the season he had. Fernando and mkh

He knew the player well enough after one full season in an inferior league? It was as if we had purchased him for peanuts. As I already stated on this forum, this transfer alone is reason enough for me to fully support the scouting team/Joe Shields rather than giving Enzo any real influence over transfers. I don't disagree; I'm not interested in the merit of it (giving him more or less say) that much--just what may have taken place. Same could be said about Lavia: his one PL showing was a nightmarish one. I'm sure the club saw some quality in his game, but it also applies; he did not "dominate" midfields in the PL, and only did better in championship.
