It seems as though we made our intentions known to Benfica that we would be paying his release clause at some point many weeks ago. We then spoke directly to Enzo, convinced him to come and agreed personal terms, and then when it came down to actually negotiating with Benfica we submitted a bid way below the release clause.

You can certainly why the coach and club reacted so angrily. Benfica is a selling club so long as you pay what they ask. They were probably resigned to reluctantly sell him because the release clause was too much to turn down. But when we instead lowball them and mess with the players head you get the reaction we saw.

They can not turn down the release clause. That is the whole point of a it existing.

Closer to what?

He already signed for the Saudi team last week.

It was rumored TB was very eager to bring him in soon after takeover but it was blocked by TT. I thought it was ridiculous, but now I believe TB could really see him more as a stop-gap filler than marketing asset.

He's just signed for a new club... Making like 500k a day or something absolutely crazy like that

It beggars belief people still think these same players who also won the Champions league and Super cup are suddenly bad players? With the right coaching these players are some of the best in the PL.

erm, did you see the way we were playing with the same manager and the same players since we won those?

we have been crushed with injuries as well

let's also drill down

this was the CL Final-winning team:

in BOLD BLACK are gone from the club (plus CHO, who is on loan)

in Bold RED are players injured a tonne since

in Bold BLUE are players who should stay (as should Reece and Chilwell) Of these the most contentious on here are only 2, Havertz and Mount, and both have been poor, under multiple managers at times

in BOLD GREEN need to GO (Kante, listed in Bold Red already, IF he accepts OUR deal, then fine, he stays, as we will not get shit for him) Kepa perhaps as a backup, but I would rather sell him

there is NO legit debate on the greens, they are all done with us as a way forward, poor players now, Jorginho is a fucking mess, the ONLY player on the planet (no bullshit) who made him acceptable was prime Kante and Wee Baldy is well spent as a day-to-day force

who?

certainly none of the ones in Green (the gotta goes)

plus

Kai has struggled under every manager here

Mount has struggled now lately under Tuchel and under Potter

the others in Blue, ie the stays (Thiago and Kova), plus Reece, Chilwell, and Kante are fine when fully healthy

5 months would cost £150m just in wages (as taxes would come out, so we would have to double it up to pay him the same net)

lololol

I'd rather meet Jimmy savile as a child, than pay that for him

Atleti fans claim each Felix's goal had cost them 2.4 mil euro, hope it will come cheaper for us.

Btw, funnily enough Felix was claimed football god after 6 months in Benfica before he flopped after getting big move, so genuinely interested what he will show here.

People not rating Mac Alister??

I'd take him over Mount in a heartbeat. Hes a far better player in my opinion.

It's extremely worrying that we are looking to give Mount a new contract along with a permanently injured Kante.

Turning into a circus here.

For sure he will get some injury or will be dropped after bad games and in the end he will cost us 1m per game just playing.

At this point surely kalvin Phillips has to be looked at? I really wouldn't have a problem with him here.

You are clearly biased towards home-grown players. You like Mount and want Rice and Phillips here. All 3 mid table players at best.

Seeing quotes from Potter now saying Pulisic is out injured again for as long as a couple of months. We need to bin this crock the moment the summer window opens. Made of glass is an understatement when it comes to him.

Get the 2 lightweight wingers Pulisic and Ziyech out and replace them with some strong, powerful athletes.

That €2.4M figure for every goal contribution (G+A) is sensationalist, and would only be true if he left on a free transfer now which obviously won't be the case.

But assuming the loan won't be made permanent (no buy option) I really fear a few million a goal is what we're going to be paying for Felix. Total cost of the loan is around €18M including loan fee and wages so he'd have to score or assist ten goals or more to even take it under €2M per goal contribution. Considering the amount of games remaining the more likely return would be a maximum of five goals and a couple of assists which would amount to somewhere between €2M and €3M per goal involvement. That's how fucking bonkers the loan is.

The only way this deal can make any sense financially is if he somehow lightens up the whole team and we make the UCL qualification (which we won't) or we somehow fluke our way to another UCL title (which we won't). If either of those happens the deal will have been an unprecedented masterstroke but realistically the chances are very slim.
