Sarr was never going to be the answer, he's the cheap answer.

Let's think about things

ok, let's think

here is every right-footed (Sarr is right-footed) and ambipedal (there is only ONE ambipedal, Dean Huijsen) CB on the planet valued over £26m on T-Markt

many (not all) of the unavailables we did try to get

in order of valuation (in euros)

strike-throughs are not available

bold are viable options for me

William Saliba 90m
Pau Cubarsí  80m
Dean Huijsen  70m the only ambipedal
Dayot Upamecano 70m (update: off ther board, just renewed with Bayern aweek or so ago)
Rúben Dias   60m
Cristian Romero  60m  (overrated, pass)
Marc Guéhi  55m (it would have cost us £144.8m to match the Citeh offer (ie fees and salary) for 7.5 years, plus he did not want to come back here from what I have seen)
Leny Yoro    55m
Ilya Zabarnyi 50m
Ibrahima Konaté   50m  (overrated and wants huge money, pass)
Ousmane Diomande  45m (BUT he just renewed until 2030 and his release clause is still £70m, so IF Sporting will not budge on that, it's a pass )
Luka Vuskovic 40m
Jarell Quansah 40m
Malick Thiaw 40m
Matthijs de Ligt 40m

then all the rest are valued at 35m euros:

Abdukodir Khusanov
Cristhian Mosquera

Jan Paul van Hecke
Edmond Tapsoba pass
Bremer (coming off a horrid injury, and is soon 29yo, pass)
Nathan Collins pass
Bafodé Diakité  pass
Yann Bisseck  pass
Maxence Lacroix pass
Ezri Konsa
Trevoh Chalobah

end

so there are only 3 somewhat viable options for me, IMHO, on that list, and none of those 3 are are at all locked down sure things in terms of being potentially better than Mamadou Sarr, and one (Diomande) is crazy money for the transfer fee

THIS, in terms of right-footed CBs, is who I would go for (obviously now talking summer 2026) as Jacquet was not doable:

Caicedo LOVES him

We probably thought that since Rennes are a small team and not so wealthy we could swoop in and lowball them with £35-40m like we were told initially. Instead, they stood their ground and stuck to their demand for their record sale.

Now we’ll look like clowns who briefed for weeks that we wanted this player badly and will see him potentially starting for a direct rival for years.

Again, I’m not crazy about Jacquet as if he’s some world class player but if he was your #1 choice and presumably someone that Rosenior knows well and recommended and you don’t get him that’s a terrible look.

JACKET POTATO TO LIVERPOOL IS HERE WE GO

Told you lot yesterday we won't get this through, we are all media talk, giving the fans what they want to hear and we weren't even in the race because we would sooner fetch players from France to save money than bu players

What a shit show, I'm howling at this, it's happening time after time

Standard these days...manager wants player..manager doesn't get player.

Not surprised this has happened drag it out enough and another team swoop on not messing around and dragging it out clear how it ends.

Fabrizio: “remember everyone, watch out for Chelsea these last days of the window. They’re going to be very BUSY. Not just a CB but also maybe midfielder and attacker!”

In reality, busy = sending out a bunch of ultra fringe players who weren’t close to the first team out on loan and recalling a CB who may not even get into the team ahead of dogshit Badiashile and Tosin.

Liverpool and Rennes have reached a €72m agreeement over the signing of France U21 international centre-back Jérémy Jacquet (20), according to RMC Sport’s Fabrice HawkinsThe highly-rated 20-year-old centre-back will join the Reds in the summer after rejoining Rennes on loan to see out the remainder of the Ligue 1 campaign with Stade Rennais.

Rennes have reportedly agreed to a €72m total transfer package, which would beat Rennes’ previous club-record sale of €64m-rated Jérémy Doku to Manchester City back in 2024. According to Fabrizio Romano, Jacquet has also agreed personal terms with Arne Slot’s Liverpool FC.

In Liverpool, Jacquet could reunite with fellow Frenchmen Hugo Ekitike and Ibrahima Konaté. Although the former RB Leipzig is out of contract next June, it would not be a stretch so consider Jacquet as the replacement for Konaté.

EXCLUSIVE Deal between Liverpool and Rennes for Jérémy Jacquet. €72M bonuses included. The center-back would be loaned out immediately to Rennes until the end of the season. Jacquet must give his approval. Liverpool is on the verge of winning its battle with Chelsea for Jérémy Jacquet.

it is pretty crazy that Pool are paying £62.3m (the highest number quoted yet the whole long drawn-out time between them and us and Rennes that I have seen) and NOT even getting the lad NOW

Probably figure that he doesn’t immediately displace Konate right now so they can wait until the summer and let him play every week at Rennes.

For £62m they must be 100% convinced that this kid will be a VVD level CB in the future. Insane money for a 20 year old CB who will have ONE season’s worth of football under his belt by the time he arrives.

Bet we’ll get a brief midday tomorrow from every journalist simultaneously saying “Chelsea looked around in the market and were going to make a couple of signings but then decided they loved the players they had instead. They’re expecting to go big for targets in the summer.”

Fabrizio and others now revealing that our own tactic of hoarding loads of young CB talents swayed Jacquet’s decision. LMAO! That’s what BlueCo gets. He saw a much clearer path to becoming “the man” at Liverpool because we have so many options all around his age on our books.

Its incredible how everyone says we were overpaying for him, who is he, doesn't look that good.

Now Liverpool get him and we all act like we can't do business. You lot are mad.

We got Estevao and Quenda who are the most talented players in the world at their age bracket. We got Caicedo the most coveted midfielder. Lavia who was wanted by major clubs.

We literally beat out clubs that have massive names to do all this. You don't get every player - especially ones you think are overvalued which is potentially what happened here. It also seems like the coming over next season was a sticking point for both clubs so we may be looking at different options.

Nobody even knew who Jacquet was before this transfer window.. that’s why it’s hard to believe anyone is annoyed about missing out on him.

What annoys the fanbase is the constant bullshit PR nonsense, treating us like children, saying they are going for a player to then use the exact same excuse to why they didn’t.

I’m personally not phased. I knew there was a strong possibility of this happening and that’s why I’m not investing my time or energy into transfer windows like years before.

It’s best to concentrate on what we have and who we get once they are holding up the shirt and hope for the best.
