Antonio Rudiger says his future at Chelsea is up to club

https://theathletic.com/news/antonio-rudiger-says-his-future-at-Chelsea-is-up-to-club/msAt0PKuf8jo/

Antonio Rudiger has increased the pressure on Chelsea by suggesting the club are the ones who will decide whether he stays or goes.

The Chelsea defender's current deal expires at the end of the season and he has already received offers from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain to join them as a free agent in the summer.

The Athletic revealed earlier this month the Germany international is now looking for a salary in the region of £225,000-a-week to remain at Stamford Bridge.

It is understood Rudiger, who is one of the lowest paid senior players in the squad right now on £90,000-a-week, had already made up his mind to leave earlier in the campaign. The 28-year-old had been offered around £140,000 to stay in August with the warning the offer wouldn’t get any better than that and he was upset by their stance.

Talks stopped for months until Chelsea reached out in late December to reach a new agreement. There is a bit more positivity on both sides that something could still be finalised but Rudiger feels the hold-up so far has been caused by the club

After being asked what it will take for him to stay, the centre half told The Athletic: “I feel great here, I have always said it. I think the way I play you can see that I’m happy here. But there are also other people who have to make decisions.”

It is believed the Chelsea hierarchy have prioritised securing new terms with the Germany international over Andreas Christensen, who also has just over four months remaining on his contract.

The hierarchy are upset Christensen walked away from two contract offers that they felt had been agreed and now has new agents negotiating from scratch. However, it is understood that not every factor of the Denmark international’s package had been given the green light.

Rudiger has sparked some optimism and is willing to compromise by suggesting he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge to win the Premier League, a competition he has yet to win.

Speaking after Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup Final by beating Palmeiras 2-1, Rudiger added: “Of course I want to win the Premier League.

“Does it keep getting better and better for me at Chelsea? Yes. We had never won this trophy (FIFA Club World Cup) in Chelsea’s history before. I’m very delighted that we didn’t give up, that we did our thing. We tried everything and won.

“I just want to help, I just want to be important and lead by example. This is the main thing. We all showed character against Palmeiras. None of us gave up. Thiago Silva gave away the penalty (for Palmeiras to equalise) but he didn’t lack anything. He continued and continued. And there was a great impact from the guys who came on from the bench, Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, Malang Sarr, Timo Werner and Saul Nigues. They all worked very hard.

“The Premier League is the toughest competition to be honest because Manchester City set a very high standard. We have to get to a point where we can go on a long marathon.”

Chelsea currently trail Pep Guardiola’s side by 16 points so are very unlikely to catch them this season. Rudiger will have to stay if he has to have a hope of winning the Premier League next year, although Manchester United are also known to be interested.

No chance. They tried getting Abraham off us and we were very reluctant to sell him there and we managed to convince Abraham to move to Roma. I am relieved they did not get Abraham as that is where he wanted to go initially.

Broja's on a long term contract, so we hopefully will never entertain this. Let's offer them Batshuayi instead :D

I do not know how reliable the information is, but it was reported that Chelsea moved from 140K to 170K in the last week.

He’s arguably the best CB in Europe currently. Knowing that it would take a massive sum of money to replace him it’s hard to fathom why we aren’t offering him terms that are acceptable to him.

Leads me to believe that Toni is actually fine with the money on offer but is just waiting as long as possible in order to see what develops elsewhere. If Real Madrid goes bananas and adds the wages of Mbappe, Haaland, and Pogba to their books they may not have enough left for Toni. Same deal with PSG. Bayern are probably the ones to worry about most with Süle going.

on the only thing I can think of is that club is looking at his age

he turns 29yo in 16 days

so will be 30yo for last 3 months of next season

that said, I think he has

3 peak seasons left + the rest of this

now if the club thinks only 2 peak ones left, plus the remainder of this one, that is where it gets tricky

They gave 5 years contract to almost 28 years old Alonso. For CBs especially should not be an issue.

And what a mistake that was, we couldn't even sell Alonso last summer due to his wage demand.
