We brought Matic back for big money after letting him go and it's widely reported we wanted Lukaku back before he went to United.

Matic was 21yo when we bought him, 23yo when we sold him, after a one year loan to Vitesse following a year here, and we only paid a net £18m more when we bought him back, which was a steal, as he was a really sold DMF for us for 3 years, plus we turned a 10m profit or so off the price paid for the 2nd buy and then the sale to Manure.

Lukaku was a teen when we bought him, and we would be paying £50 to £60 MORE than what we sold him for for. All for only one full sub 30yo season. He turns 30 towards the end of the season after this coming season.

Rice will cost £75 to £85m MORE than what we got for him (which was zero, we let him go as a teen)

then I am in for Lacroix

although I SO rate the monster that is Sven Botman too

Imagine if in 3 years or so Mbuyamba comes good and Botman is playing with him

They are both not exactly rapid are they? Currently I think pace is more important for CBs atm (esp in our playing style ) than a few cms more height. If i have to choose between a 1,90 defender with lightning pace and 1,95 one with decent pace, i woud always go for the former.

I truly wonder whether the club will just go for Lukaku now, despite his age as you mentioned, and not being in it for Haaland next year when Haaland will provide a longer term of success (yes, I know there will be a lot of clubs in for him next summer but still).

Haaland wouldn't be 'long term' either, Raiola will make sure of that. After all, the pizza man will need new agent commissions every few years..

Hard to disagree but it still screams long term more than with Lukaku. And who knows...if we can keep being successful with Haaland, maybe he'll stay for the long term.

Even if he doesn't stay long term we will still get all our money back when he gets sold and reinvest in someone else.

They are both far from slow, but yes, not Lacroix FoN pace.

Solution.

Buy them both, as combined they would cost what Bastoni or Marquinhos or De Ligt would alone, lolol.

Sell Zouma FFS. Tomori is likely sold. Sarr is not good enough, but was free, so will generate funds no matter what. Thiago Silva leaves after June 2022. I am not yet sold on Guehi. Certainly not sold at all on Ampadu as a CB. Azpi will be done in a couple years or so.

Mbuyamba is so not a guaranteed star yet, not at all.

Plenty of room for both Lacroix and Botman.

I am also happy with Kepa as 2nd keeper but Sarri is close to Lazio so he may go for him. Maybe even RLC? Jorginho is too good for Lazio I guess.

I like that solution but unfortunately we both know this is not gonna happen. The club is so prudently managed that we are unlikely to dish 30m out on a player who has just had 1 season in a first tier league. I personally think on this one it would be well worth the gamble. Lacroix tactical awareness, pace, height and stamina are characteristics that will help him make an impression anywhere. Moreover we are in a perfect position to make a gamble on a young defender like the uncapped Frenchman (read: he would have the summer to work with TT) or Botman. We have a settled core of CBs, so no risk signing an extraone, two of which are ageing so a genuine perspective to integrate a new prospect. We obviously woudl get him. Wolfsburg to RBL is literally almost the smallest step up you can make  4th to 2nd. They obviously can offer him being first XI but working with TT, Silva, Azpi should trump that everyday. Blooding in a new young cb next season is the perfect time with all those legendary defenders in our squad right now about to play a mammoth 60 games season.
