The trick to build a high quality depth of squad is find 3 players to compete high for two certain position's then if possible a squad filler as 4th choice who happily knows his place yet still has a big moment or two in them a season (ie the O Shea type). For example, in the two more defensive CM right now we have the perfect balance of Kova, Kante and Jorginho fighting for 2 spots between them, with the games we have and factoring injuries/suspensions there's more than enough minutes to keep all three happy.Frank is arguably going down this road at fullback now with James RB, Emerson LB and Azpi shifting between both.

At CM, CB and the wings we can comfortably get high quality depth and keep them all happy, ST will be tougher though.

Spot on. It's how City are able to keep such a strong contingent of midfield and attacking talent happy because they all get regularly rotated in and out with the exception of one or two who are pretty much mainstay's.

I like our options at present. What Lamps has done by bringing through and trusting the younger players is not just freshened up the first team but also hugely improved the squad depth. A couple of astute additions in the summer alongside a more experienced group of young players and possibly one or two more youngsters ready to be integrated into the first team squad and we could be in a real good position to challenge again.

With regards to the striker situation, I think Bats is a very good and ideal second choice. He definitely isn't first choice quality but he does seem to offer a good impact off the bench regularly and he's always good for a goal. Whether he would be prepared to continue such a role after this season I'm not sure though.

If we were to get another striker in the summer I think it will depend on Tammy. If Tammy continues to score all season long and gets 20+ goals which he is well on his way to doing then I find it difficult to argue about trying to upgrade on a 22 year old scoring that many goals for the team. In which case you are then looking for someone who can challenge and push him for the starting berth but without the expectations that they would be automatically a first choice. However I think if Tammy keeps banging them in, the club could take a bit of a calculated risk with who they buy as opposed to a more proven commodity. In my head I'm thinking perhaps someone like Haland. He'll be in big demand and although some crazy figures are being quoted around at the moment, I still see him realistically moving for £40-50m (possibly more if a bidding war ensues) so it would be a big transfer splash. However if Tammy is already our 'proven striker' in the Premier League, the risk is much easier to make. He could just be on a hot streak of form (thinking Piatek last season) but he could also very well develop into one of the best strikers in Europe.

Our midfield options right now are fine and think we'll manage. But add anymore quality into it without selling and there could be problems.

Easy to say that but no high quality players would want to keep on be in and out of the team and it's easy to keep everyone happy when the team are winning almost every week - like Man City (and also if you pay them lots of $$$$$$$$$$$). Problems come when the team don't.

I think Sancho is wanting to move here. Again he is in the press talking, this time that SFL and Drogba were two of his idols.

This comes on top of similar comments and the picturs that he has with the other youung lads. I would not be surprised if he is brought this January and comes in then or during the Summer.

But where would Eriksen fit in though? Our midfield is already stacked as it is, even excluding Barkley - we have Jorginho, Kovacic, Kante, Mount and Loftus-Cheek - and there's already a tiny issue of how we do set up our midfield - Kovacic/Jorginho/Mount or Jorginho/Kante/Mount or Jorginho/Kante/Kovacic? And that's without even considering Loftus-Cheek. Mount seems to be the No.1 choice under Lampard and I don't think he's going to be dropped. If you move him out wide to the left, we would then have issues with Pulisic/CHO. Willian looks likely to stay (Lampard has been expressing his love for him) and IF we sign Sancho, then there doesn't seem to be any place to fit Eriksen in.

Moreover, while we all want 2 world class players for every position, I'm not sure how sustainable that is in the long run. Squad management would then be a major headache because everyone would want to play in the XI week in, week out and at some point down the line, players are gonna start making noise if they aren't playing every week and keep on getting rotated. Only Man City and Juventus arguably can boast to have WC or great players for every position (barring City's defence) but other big clubs have a decent balance between the first team players and backups who can do a good job when called upon but also okay with not playing every week. We need to get what Lampard wants and not just buy players for the sake of it. Otherwise, it could cause confusion and muddle things up in regards to how we want to play, set up etc.

You are totally right, but the likes of Mount, CHO, Tomori, Reece James, Pulisic, Tammy will still be considered as young players next season, too, so I guess two or three quality senior arrivals are needed IMHO. They (Mount, CHO etc.) are of top quality, but still young come next season to play week in, week out and the way I see Frank Lampard the manager, I don't think he is the type to play the same '11' from August to May. A midfield six of Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, RLC, Mount and Eriksen would be a balanced one IMHO, but for sure it's a long shot with Eriksen and just a thought of mine because I like him as a player.

It's kinda hilarious that people think the Pulisic type transfer is now easily doable just because we did it with him. If it was, a lot more clubs would have done it already. Unless we throw an obscene amount of money at Dortmund in January, there's no reason for them to sell Sancho then when they can start a bidding war for him in the summer.

Oh we do need experienced players to complement the younger players but whether we need more in the midfield area is debatable considering we already have 3. Lampard might look at other areas to bolster instead.

Lampard won't play the same XI throughout the season but he would want a consistent side. A midfield six of Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek, Mount and Eriksen would require a lot of rotation, different midfield set-up almost every time, risking disrupting the cohesion within the side.

Also, Gallagher seems to be doing well on loan at Charlton. We don't know what Lampard has in mind for him. Might even get him to take up Barkley's spot in midfield.

How is it hilarious? I said a January or Summer transfer. Also, I do not see the buy in Jan get in Summer as such a great deal. Most clubs would want the player straight away. I also did not say that he would not cost an obscene amount of money, as he clearly will.

Sancho just signed a new contract in the summer. Of course they are not going to sell him January. Sancho is also a key player for them, while Pulisic contract with Dortmund was up in 2020 IIRC. What happened with Pulisic was rare as Jason mentioned. If Sancho moves, it will happen in summer for sure.

No one is moaning. He's being very quiet last seven games between two international breaks. According to Whoscored 6.91 has been his best rating in this period. He started the season very well but dropped in form recently. Many agreed with me here that RLC from last season is better player so I'm just curious to see what happens when he is back from injury...

Ruben has more convincing to do than Mount IMO. His off the ball work and fitness consistency needs to be worked on.

“Like looking into the future” – Some Chelsea fans dream of two huge English signings

https://www.chelsea-news.co/2019/11/like-looking-future-chelsea-fans-dream-two-huge-english-signings/

Tammy Abraham got his first goal for England tonight, slotting home after great work from Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho down the left.

The former is already starring for Chelsea, and some fans on social media were keen to see the other two added to Frank Lampard’s Arsenal.

“It’s like looking into the future,” one dreaming poster said. It would be s stretch to get both in one summer, but certainly getting one or the other seems on the cards.

They would both make excellent additions to this Chelsea team as Frank looks to reinforce after a year out of the market.

Hope we don't sign Sancho.

I feel cech was brought in for this particular reason. To recognise the targets early. Once that is done, then I hope marina does not screw up. Let's hope.

Big Pete's role does seem to be pretty loosely defined but I've never had the vibe that it involves identifying transfer targets. I hope the club is building a 'boot room' type knowledge group that it draws upon but we'll see. For now it's just guesswork what Pete gets up to beyond the publicly announced liaison role. If anything.
