Mr Nice Guy handed explosive Chelsea and United clash at the Bridge

Referee Mike Riley has been handed Sunday's showdown between Chelsea and Manchester United because neither team dislikes him too much.

The Premier League rivals have been drawn into a war of words over John Terry's controversial clearance to play at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea skipper was ruled out of Sunday's game after being sent off for serious foul play against Manchester City.

But Terry's automatic three-match ban was rescinded by referees chief Keith Hackett - sparking an angry backlash from United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

With the two clubs at loggerheads Yorkshireman Riley has been given the job of keeping the peace.

A Premier League insider told SunSport: 'Of all the top officials, Riley has upset the teams the least.'

I dont think there would have been a worse ref named for this game than Mike ( Manchester United ) Riley.

I expect him to award them a penalty as per usual. I believe its in his contract. :whistling:

Theres a problem with Refs. It has to be one of the worst jobs in the World, as whatever you do you're generally hated.

To be a Prem ref you have to work your way up from Sunday league, Semi Professional etc (gobbed on, abused and threatened on the way) and then your in charge of these spoilt wankers on £150 000 a week. They must be some kind of masochist.

The FA needs to give them decent money, so a better calibre of people would do the job.

That is an extremely valid point! There does need to more incentives for more competant people to do the job!

Apparently you have to go through tough fitness tests to be a ref! You wouldn't have though it looking at he fat, balding twats who ref the premier league would you?

Too right, you never think they have to go on regular 16 mile runs and sprint tests as well. It really is a thankless task, though Poll has used it as a vehicle for his new found 'fame' on various radio stations. Just waiting for him to be on Strictly Come Dancing or something.....

I'm sure you won't have to wait long, he will pop up on some crap reality show sooner or later!

For all his vanity and faults he makes Riley look like some circus act. The most cuntish thing he did was make Cech crawl off the pitch after the Hunt kicking, but he also ended Arsenals unbeaten run with a penalty to Shrek that shouldnt have been.

If refs were paid a decent remuneration, and held to account, you can bet they'd be more careful...

The cunt should have let us take that free kick at the death........20 seconds early he blew.

Last season we fell victim to a ref blowing up after the allocated time when Tevez scored. I wish they'd make their minds up on this.

The referee is the official timekeeper for the match, and may make an allowance for time lost through substitutions, injured players requiring attention, or other stoppages. This added time is commonly referred to as stoppage time or injury time, and is at the sole discretion of the referee. The referee alone signals the end of the match. In matches where a fourth official is appointed, toward the end of the half the referee signals how many minutes of stoppage time he intends to add. The fourth official then informs the players and spectators by holding up a board showing this number.

The signalled stoppage time may be further extended by the referee. Added time was introduced because of an incident which happened in 1891 during a match between Stoke and Aston Villa. Trailing 1–0 and with just two minutes remaining, Stoke were awarded a penalty. Villa's goalkeeper kicked the ball out of the ground, and by the time the ball had been recovered, the 90 minutes had elapsed and the game was over.

That last paragraph had me in stitches.

Isnt Mike Riley the one who Sent Off Michael Ballack with a stright red two years back? And also Sent of Macsherano because he was arguing with the Ref. and why am I not surprised as that game was against Man Utd.
it was steve Bennett who sent off Mascherano against man you last season

The performance from riley today was one of the worst performances ive ever seen from a refereee ever. Guy deserves shooting. He makes football a non-contact sport.

Sorry but this is a load of bollocks. Just a few weeks ago we experience one that was FAR worse. Riley didn't pull the game up for anything that shouldn't have been pulled up. What he did fuck up was making us start the game with 10 men, and the confusing way in which he ended the game. But other than that, he did fairly well.
