The Daily Mail are today reporting that Chelsea may finally have a destination for Danny Drinkwater.

The Sunday edition of the tabloid claims that Brighton are a side interest in finally taking the central midfielder off Chelsea’s books, after two years in which he’s barely stepped foot on the pitch. The South Coast club apparently want the former Leicester man on loan for the year.

Drinkwater didn’t travel to Germany with the rest of the squad for yesterday’s friendly with Borussia Monchengladbach, staying back in England with Tiemoue Bakayoko amid rumours that both were getting closer to finally exiting Stamford Bridge for good.

After being utterly frozen out under Maurizio Sarri – he didn’t appear after the Charity Shield game one year ago today – Drinkwater did feature in a couple of friendlies for Frank Lampard.

However with all of his senior players now reporting, Danny has been squeezed out again. He likely will be hoping more than anyone that this rumoured interest from the Seagulls is real.

Hope it happens before season starts, its good for him and damn good for us....he is a good guy im sure but never ever Chel quality to begin with nevermind this slow and injury prone version. Good luck to him.

Norwich and Brighton have made enquiries to Chelsea about taking midfielder Danny Drinkwater on loan but his wages remains a major stumbling block.

Drinkwater looked certain to stay at Stamford Bridge for another season last week because it was understood no concrete offers had been made.

But with the window coming to a close on Thursday, newly-promoted Norwich and Brighton have registered late interest.

for most middling English players, you can double Tranfermakt's valuation, so we are looking at a £21m or so loss (plus £12.5m in pissed away wages for last two years) IF we sell him now

he turns 30yo later this season, so it is truly last chance saloon to get at least £14-15m for him, let alone £20m plus

£33m down the shitter and that is IF we dump him now (and do not have to eat partial wages, which we may, and that takes the total loss to £40m plus or so, grrrrr)

Was reading the first few pages after we signed him and its funny so many people thought he was better than both Matic and Chalobah (although he waa brought in to replace Nate). He was a waste buy although there was soem games with Conte he looked alright (well a lot better than the disaster that was Bakayoko). Dont think he even amounted the same game time Chalobah did under Conte that previous season before we bought him either. For the sake of his career, which he still has plenty to offer at a bit of a lower level,  he needs to leave.

And another thing nobody has considered is Reece James surprisingly confident and natural performances in a MF role for Wigan as well which is another option for Frank in and around there as well as at RB if Zappacosta goes. I think if we played 433 and it was still Sarri, he would of really fancied him in that 3 man MF but also think Frank might see him as a very capable option in those 2 deeper positions. Drinkwater could maybe cover those roles as hes suited to a 2 man MF more too but I dont think his wages or what he offers on the pitch warrants him staying.

The two years leading up to us signing him he was very much a better player than Matic. The latter was awful in 15/16 (even by the standards our squad set that season) and was the weak link of our 16/17 title team and his spot was unanimously the one position we all agreed we needed new blood in.

You can never get excited with signing a player like Drinkwater but I was relitevely content (not with the fee and wages but I tried to put that to one side) as on paper he was a good fit for Conte's 343 as he had a proven relationship with Kante, was defensively sound, knew how to play a 2 man midfield and was good at playing long key passes on the transition.

He's very much been a waste of money given what's happening with him now but I don't think he was particularly shit on the pitch when he played under Conte and the comments made on this thread back at those times seem to back it up as most seemed happy enough with him.
