Chelsea boss Antonio Conte told Cesc Fabregas: You should have played more - report

http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/830062/Chelsea-News-Antonio-Conte-Cesc-Fabregas-Tiemoue-Bakayoko-Nemanja-Matic.

Hopefully we will see Kante-Bakayoko-Fab in a fun 3

A sign of using a false 9 perhaps?

There's no need of overthinking. It's likely a case of Conte recognizing Fabregas' talents and wanting to keep him in the squad. And quite frankly, it would be stupid to sell him when he's one of our only 2 creative players in the side and our squad depth isn't exactly huge right now!

I love Cesc and I really, REALLY hope Conte decides to play with 3 midfielders like he did with Pirlo, Vidal, and Pogba. Cesc would be unbelievable with the legs of both Kante and Bakayoko around him. Free of defensive dirty work he could be unstoppable.

I think we'd be able to completely dominate most of the PL including some of the other big teams with that midfield 3. We also wouldn't have to worry against opponents like Spuds and City where they dominated much of the play and possession due to Matic and Kante being too limited. We would be the ones doing the bullying.

My thought from the words 'a bigger role'. Seems we're not in any rush to sign a striker, and also with no sign of playing with 3 midfielder formation, to keep Baka, Kante and Cesc playing, we might go for false 9.

We will never play 352 while Eden's here bar late on in games and some big un's. Plus it's not as easy as saying Baka and Kante to do all the defensive work for him, Cesc would still leave hole's for team's to exploit. Plus there's the stamina issue, it's no coincidence this year is the first time for years he has performed well late in the season, starting him week in week out will just end up with him being tanked by new year again.

Like I said, there's no need of overthinking. 'A bigger role' is basically just a loose way of saying more game time. I mean, we have more games next season and since Fabregas seems certain to stay, it'll be stupid of Conte not to use him more often than he did last season. And besides, Fabregas has never really shone when he played as a 'False 9' for Barcelona and Spain.

Why not? Hazard can play just off the striker as a second forward. I'd be shocked if we don't see the 3-5-2 a bunch this season.

Less running around chasing opposition midfielders and attackers for Cesc means less fatigue and drain of his stamina. If a 36 year old Pirlo could play the role at an elite level I see no reason Cesc can't. They have the same skill set. Doesn't have to be every match, but I'd love to give it a go as our main formation.

I could imagine we could play like this to accomodate him:

--------------GK-----------

-----3 man defense-----

Danilo--Baka--Kante-Pedro

--------------Cesc--------------

--------Hazard-----Bats-------

Yeah just need 3 wc flexible defenders at the back , you can see Conte's thinking in the middle of the park is similar when he was at Juve , deffo think that is the way forward with that 3 , personnel and other teams may sway things.

How many players do you think Conte will let to have a 'free ride' in the XI? Hazard pretty much already has a free role and I doubt Conte is going to allow another one and have only 8 players doing the work against the opposition. And Pirlo was able to play at a high level for as long as he did because the pace and intensity are much lower in Serie A than the Premier League. Do you really think he would have survived that long had he been playing in the Premier League?

Also, it's all good saying we'll playing the 3-5-2 a lot next season but do we have the squad depth to do that? We currently only have 3 CMs - Fabregas, Kante and Bakayoko - and what if one of them gets injured or suspended? Matic is leaving. There's no hint of us using someone from the academy and even if we do that, the quality might not be there. And there's nothing suggesting that we're after another midfielder in the market.

To your first point, I'm not saying Cesc would just stand there like a cardboard cut-out when we don't have the ball. Of course he would still put in effort on the defensive end. He just won't have an enormous responsibility to chase people around like he would in a midfield 2. It won't be disastrous having him in the middle of the park against top teams if there's another pair of legs around him.

The depth point is a good one. We are indeed short there if Matic is off. I just hope that at least in the big games against top half opposition (and particularly against the "big 6" where winning the midfield battle is key) we employ the 3-5-2. Having that 3rd midfielder in there when most of the good sides use 2 could be hugely beneficial. For example, that powerful midfield 2 of Dembele & Wanyama that Spuds employ wouldn't be able to bully us and press as relentlessly when they're outnumbered.
