When he was put under pressure, he could pass to mikel and he dealt with the ball under pressure like a boss They both complimented each other well, Mikel kept it simple e.g great composure on the ball, 1-2 touch passing and as you said, making himself available at all times, all of this allowed Cesc to play his natural game but i'm not going to give Mikel all the credit, Cesc bossed it and played a big part in all of our goals. kellzfresh

Cesc decline started with Matic's, I can't of course, say the latter caused the former, but fact remains, if he has a reliable pivot player playing alongside him, or if he's in a 4-3-3 with decent coverage for him, he'll shine. I don't think we should sell him, I think he can still do many things for us. He doesn't play in big games - in a 4-2-3-1 he definitely doesn't, who knows in a 4-3-3 - but we have been discussing this on Kev's thread, players can win us titles or contribute for them even without performing in big games. If we have a more suitable player for those games, we'll play them. I believe Cesc has space in the team, and he was very good today. kellzfresh and Ossie the King
CHOULO19 24,332
I wonder if the posters who were blaming Matic's bad performances on Cesc will now say that Fabregas' bad performances were actually because of Matic since he had a different partner today in Mikel and was excellent. To clarify, I don't believe either of those statements to be true, but surely that logic has to go both ways? And then there's the hierarchy in the wages. He's one of the highest earners in the team, only behind Hazard if I am not mistaken. He's too expensive not to be a star player. The Mak 4,459
It's officially the 'second half' of the season: enter Cesc. Typically he great in the first half of the season and shite in the second throughout his career. Only in one season at Arsenal was he bad in the first half of the season and great in the second half, so I hope this is the case now. Still, I think if the likes of Juve are sniffing around both him and Oscar in the summer they should be moved on. Particularly because of the wages Cesc appears to be on. We need players who will perform consistently and not just for half of the season. At the very least, players who are not completely anonymous when not at 100%. robsblubot 3,595
Of course fabregas should play better with Mikel! Fabregas is terrible at defending so the mere fact that Mikey's stays deep and focus on that area helps balance the midfield. Being far more rounded and making runs forward leave the other CM with defensive duties. That's pretty much like all top clubs play: two rounded cms. will this work against stronger opposition? No. neither fabregas, much less Mikel belong there.

Will quote bein sports: nobody cares about Chelsea anymore specially with a tampon manager (tampon is mine :)). We can't get top 4 and are nowhere near CL contenders. btw who said I did not enjoy it?! But this is mourinhos squad down to ivanovic. Is he good enough now? I am thinking ahead and rehashing ideas and players isn't the way to go.

You're thinking ahead but I think you should leave that ahead thinking in the basement with the door locked for now (I do the same all the time but not today). Today was fun but who knows what's in store in the next game. 15/16 is dead (bar FA Cup succes) but we've known about that for months. Well, I was not the one drawing definitive conclusions based on a single game and against glorious CP. Disagree. This is the time to experiment and give minutes to the young players whenever possible. If not, what is the job requirement for Hiddink? Not drop?! If so, that's the easiest job in the world! Take on a millionaire squad and make sure they play the bare minimum. I could do that too... not that I am qualified, but would be much cheaper. Play Matic and Ramires in CM or Mikel and Fabregas or Mikel Matic. Fabregas and Matic only against weak opposition at the bridge. The rest is Jose team down to ivanovic. Tactics?! Just let Terry do that on the pitch... Missed opportunity...
CurlyHairLikeLuiz 1,625
Yes we should focus on cup success with a mid table finish at this point, so therefore there is no point in dropping our star players now when we will be relying on them next season. I didn't see anything special in Fabregas performance, nothing different from what we already saw during this season: boring and unexciting performance with no intensity at all. Somehow he got the highest score in both articles. According to @Styles in the 2nd half, a pundit even said he "ran the show". uhum. didierforever, King11Didier and The Chels

Technically in the first half he did, not because he was anything special, but because Scunny sat deep and he was picking the passes to beat a crowded defense (which is his strength). In that sense Cesc can still be an asset because we are going to have to deal with deep defense in the PL, starting with WBA on Wednesday. He is also one of the only guys in our squad who is willing to take a risk in terms of passing, if he sees a 30-40 yard ball over the top or a pass that needs to go through 3 or 4 players he tries it regardless of giving it away or not. How long did we cry out for a player like Cesc? Who could control the games, play cutting/penetrating passes through teams that sit with two banks of fours? A good few years? I can't believe he is getting criticized when he is by far our most creative central midfielder, despite a shit season so far he is still our most creative central midfielder. I can defiently understand his critics in the sense that he can let big games pass him by, he lacks athleticism, he struggles to cope with being pressed and despite great final balls to put players in his General play isn't the best, I'm talking in terms of recycling possesion and keeping play ticking over, he's not the most tactful in that regard. But in games where opponents will park the jumbo jet like Scunny did and WBA probably will, he's still the first name on the teamsheet for me. The only did that because we were playing shit and they smelt blood, last season many teams sat back against us and if Guus finds a consistent pattern again they will start doing it again this time round.
