Mata earning less than Essien and Mikel  We should give him a new contract asap!

On hindsight, after 2 years what he has achieved, seeing him earning that amount right now is obviously . But back when he joined, 67k p/w wages look reasonable.

He was on £15k a week or so ago.

Josh's wage is ridiculous to.

Yeah, just seen. Amazing to see the fortunes of players at sugar daddy clubs tbh. Sterling for Liverpool earned his £30k per week wages with being a consistent first team player last season but some of our players who have not even played a game for us are earning more than quality Bundesliga players. I guess Chalobah's wages reflect our message that he is a key part of our future and to ward off interest from other clubs not too surprised we handed him down a lucrative contract.

The wages of some of our older players

It's because there is no transfer involved. (First off, I don't buy these numbers anyway). Because the transfer fees are counted in step with the length of the contract, having no transfer fee means you can afford much higher wages. For example, Terry at 175K a week would actually be significantly cheaper per year than Willian at 85K because Willian's transfer costs 123K a week or so whereas Terry costs 0 additional money (Willian is actually probably our 2nd or 3rd most expensive player overall). By keeping existing players, you save a lot of money, even paying higher contracts. Even a small transfer (for Chelsea) of 10M pounds on a maximum 5 year deal, is still an additional 38K+ a week. You could pay an existing player 100K/week as opposed to 65K for the new player and you'd still save money.

These wages are from Jake Cohen. They are as accurate as it gets. He's put in a lot of effort. You can find them here and the reasoning he gives behind the numbers - http://www.weaintgotnohistory.com/2013/9/4/4659496/chelsea-player-wage-database

I'm sorry but this just seems like a big waste of time. It's impossible to use the horrific media as sources for ANYTHING football related. How often do we see discrepancies in transfer fees? Almost always, and these are widely reported once a transfer goes through. Now let's discuss something secretive like players' wages, it's impossible to be accurate. I wish there was transparency, but there is not and this has not helped anyone understand the truth.

That's definitely a factor, but I don't think it makes sense to just add the fee because obviously the player has nothing to do with what the club paid for him. Schwarzer is on peanuts even though he came on a free, for example.

Yup. When Mata joined he was considered a talented young player, but if his wages went beyond 100k p/w it'd have been far too much for his status at the time. Now he's established himself as one of the best playmaykers in Europe and I can see him sign a new contract soon.

Hazard is another example. He has almost triple the wages of Mata, but when he joined last summer he was (and still is) considered among the top attacking midfielders in Europe and it makes sense for him to earn that much.
