^ because to sign him would end his career - he is nowhere near Cech's or Courtois' level.

This signing makes no sense, NO SENSE whatsoever.

Don't give me the "he's English" excuse. £10 million?

Absolute bollocks.

If we want a bench warmer GK, we should be spending no more than 2 million. He's never, never, never EEEVVEEEER going to be our number 1. Drop it and move to Paul Robinson, Scott Carson or even Rob fucking Green.

So we got one of the best GK in the world and the best young GK in the world, yet still gonna pay top money for a decent back up? Make no sense what so ever, £10m is A LOT FOR A GK.

Courtois wouldn't come back here and sit on the bench, hence why he staying at Atletico where he is gaining valuable game time and is a regular starter. The club have the whole situation in hand, we either allow Courtois to grow and develop or fetch him back and let him rot on the bench. This is the catch 22 we are in, if Cech gets injured we have a problem, I don't mind Hilario but we need better to strengthen the squad.

Cech is number 1. Season after Cech will still be number 1 with Courtois getting experience here as his number 2. Season after Courtois will be number 1 so maybe Cech will go. We're only looking for back up. You don't spend £10m on back up!

I'm not quite as anti this deal as some people, providing Ruddy is happy with benching. He's a big guy, he's English and if he's happy with the situation at Chelsea (he'd be back-up to Cech and then Courtois) then we're potentially looking at 10 years of service from him.

Plus he's a good keeper, which is always nice to have in a back-up as well as providing that competition to keep the number one on his toes. In the past, players like Turnbull have cost us goals which we simply can't afford.

Why don't we go after Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster, he is also English and played game of his life last year against Barcelona?

Scottish Sun: if Ruddy does not join Chelsea then they could turn their attentions to Forster instead. :P

I really liked Alex McCarthy last season and we were interested in signing him [Daily Star] but I know it wouldn't be good for him to join us.

Why don't we just get Craig Gordon on a free? Scott Carson was also available for £700,000.

Yeah get him and then he spends the whole season on the sidelines? No way!

The most important thing is to have a capable backup that management, players and fans alike can feel comfortable with stepping in when required.

Cech has had a fair share of injuries over the last few years and with the rate of games we play, all it takes is for him to be out for 2-3 weeks with a minor injury and he misses 4-6 games. A couple of times over a season and that can amount to a substantial amount of games which could decide cup wins and league titles. I can see the league being much tighter this season and having an inadequate backup in goal if Cech is injured for a couple of games could be the difference in winning the league this year or not.

Turnbull is the type of inadequate backup that cost us games in the past, simply by not being good enough. Ruddy would be a very good backup IMO, and if he costs a few million then so be it. All it takes is Cech to be injured for a couple of months or more, and the investment will more then cover itself if it keeps us well protected in the hunt for trophies.

He's miles better than Turnbull.

Turnbull is/was terrible though and doesn't have to be the end of the argument with regards to Ruddy. There are plenty of very good back-up goalkeepers available in the market right now either on a free or for 1-2 mil who would definitely do a job. The back-up will play a maximum of 10 games, most coming in the League Cup etc, barring anything catastrophic to Cech of course. No reason why we need to get Ruddy IMO
