It will cost 39M to get the letters of his name on the back of a shirt.

on the back of the shirt it says only Illarra. so not really a problem :D

A risk paying his full buyout clause now but if he carries on how he has been playing he will be worth it and more. These type of midfielders are rare in today's market so they come at a premium. Fantastic signing.

Who pays €39m for a player who only has a season and a half of top flight football under his belt at the age of 23? And a defensive midfielder none the less.

Sure, he was good last season and played a big part in Real Sociedad making it to the Champions League places but that price is still way too high. For almost 40m I'd expect to get the absolute best defensive midfielder in the world and not just someone who could potentially become one of the best if he succeeds.

Teams that can spend freely without any adverse ramifications

DMs are rare in the market and so they cost a lot. look which problems chelsea have suffered because we didnt have a proper DM last season. we also paid 40 m for Essien, which was huge at that time. of course they overpaid, but Sociedad didnt want to negotiate so they had to pay it. also vidal/pogba etc werent available.
