Roberto Di Matteo says he leaves Chelsea with his head held high despite his dismissal as manager.

Di Matteo's reign at Stamford Bridge lasted just 262 days - six more than his predecessor Andre Villas-Boas - but during his short time in charge they won the Champions League and FA Cup.

Di Matteo was dismissed in the early hours of Wednesday morning after Chelsea'sspacer.gif 3-0 Champions League defeat to Juventus.spacer.gif

Later the same day Rafael Benitez was appointed as interim manager until the end of the season.

Di Matteo said: "I am extremely proud of the successes and trophies that we were able to bring to the club in recent months.

"Lifting Chelsea's first Champions League trophy in Munich was the best achievement in the club's history and without doubt the highlight of my career."

"I have a deep and unreserved passion for Chelsea Football Clubspacer.gif and I would like to sincerely thank all of my staff, my players and of course the Chelsea fans for their tremendous support in the intense time I have been manager at the Bridge."

Bypassing all the drama...

What does this actually mean for the club right now? This is a crucial juncture in the season, and definitely not a good time to lose your head coach.

What's going to happen to the setup of the team..will Torres automatically be restored to the starting eleven (no point in asking I guess)

And also,..how exactly can the team or the manager himself get motivated for success when this is clearly a stop-gap measure (like every other appointment)...it worked for Guus and RDM but that was much later on in the season when there were trophies in view.

I guess this is a chance for Benitez to make himself attractive in the market again.

curse of liverpool is upon us !!! hope we can remain in the top 4 at the end of this season

All the best Benitez

Please, don't make me feel like an Arsenal fan. We're only 3 pts behind the league leaders and it's not as bad as a lot of you make it look like.
