Clevemayer 764
Yeah how about we also post Zidane's quote on Maka while we're comparing Mikel to him just so we make sure this discussion is stuck in 2009?It's disappointing just how much better the respective discussion is on cfcnet.2 years ago I was argueing with them like I was at this board... but I've decided to keep my mouth shut... I'm wait'n for mikel to make one error in the next half year, so everybody can smash him again... I'm thinking about some brazilians in special... RamiCFC9 258
Is it coincidence Mikel got better only when the big players stepped up.Which leads to he isn't big player himself and isn't key player at all.He depends on others performances just like Malouda.Even 20 yers old Romeu, when he was on form was doing better then him, that has to say something. And dont tell me Ancelotti rated him - he was nowhere near the starting 11 in the big matches, actually the first time he was, at OT he played disastrously. And even AVB quickly realized that the boy Romeu is better then him. RamiCFC9 258
U can't compare Mikel with Xabi or Pirlo, the later two have far better vision and long passes. He can't be compared to Maka aswell, because Makelele was much more aggresive and a natural ball-winner.Its very hard to rate Mikel but overall i don't like his game and dont rate him as key player. capriccioso 2,545
He's a defensive midfielder. His only job when on the ball is to avoid making a mistake. There's no DM going around in the world who plays Hollywood balls every time they get the ball, not even Pirlo does that.As was said by a guy on twitter as to what would happen if Guardiola took charge of England:"No, no, no! Stevie! STEVIE! Short pass, no? Short pass? No Hollywood...no...no....NOOOOO! Can we not knock it, no? GARGH!""No, Stevie! NO! No Hollywood ball! Frank! FRANK! Ah, Mierda!" The FA will not appoint Pep Guardiola as national manager
KonohasOrangeFlash 2,607
If he went on to win the Ballon D'or, some people STILL wouldn't rate him. It has nothing to do with his playing ability, some of you guys just straight out dislike him.

The Big Drog 1,110
For all of mikels flaws I'd have him in a heartbeat over essien.
Shecks 8
I think you can accept the flaws of a player if he is adding some great contribution in some other aspect , we can accept Mata's lack of defensive ability because of his huge importance for the side's creativity .The problem with Mikel is that he does not add a lot offensively whilst he is not good enough defensively , he is neither the aggressive , energetic kind of midfielder nor the the creative , smart one as well !! Overall Mikel doesn't deserve a place in a top European club , but then again those kind of players are exactly why we lie 6th in the league . KonohasOrangeFlash 2,607
Mikel is just fine. Yes there are better but Mikel has been in good form, he could continue to grow. Keep him around.

Kieran. 6,317
He's a great DM and one of my favorite players in the squad. DMs peak at around 28 or 29 and he just turned 25.
Shecks 8
I really respect those who will defend their clubs and players when needed but that doesn't mean that we have to ignore their obvious flaws and claim players such as Mikel are "Great" or trick ourselves into believing that Mikel 25 now , who spent six years or more without any serious development will still improve and come to his peak later .Mikel is currently our best option for a double pivot role next to Lampard but hopefully next year Mikel will be nowhere near our starting 11.I have seen a lot of fans trying to come up with several excuses for the poor display of the likes of Kalou , Malouda , Mikel , Bosingwa , etc .... some posters here try to look into their best attributes and abilities rather than their very tiny contribution to the team !!We CFC fans need to admit that some of our players are not good enough to wear this club's shirt (Kalou - Malouda - Bosingwa - Ferrera - Mikel - Essien nowadays),No offense or disrespect for anyone , but showing your support for Chelsea isn't by defending the likes of Mikel when criticized but its by criticizing them . Obi is key player and important key to our midfield. Problem is we play very defensibly because we lack of creativity and good wingers. That means, we are constantly under attacks by opponent and Mikel has to play harder and more. Sure, he will eventualy make mistake or two, but overall last two months he has been, almost to say superb.
