Romelu Lukaku

You have to give kudos to what a blinder Lukaku has played into getting in such a position where he is an undisputed starter at one of the world's biggest clubs. When he was with us, he didn't have a price tag to prop him up (as we saw with Torres, a big price tag will give you 20 times more playing time and patience if it's not working) meaning he would have to earn his place in the side on merit, which lets be realistic, he wasn't good enough to do and he knew it. He also knew that if he scored goals at Everton some big boy would ignore any shortcoming's initially and make a punt (it happens so often, Benteke, Bent two other major examples) so going back to Everton was another masterstroke by him firstly £28m on a player back in 2014 was unprecedented for Everton meaning he had a guaranteed place in the side and clubs would get starry eyed by the goal record, which United did. United then lumped £75m on him, meaning he's now got what he wanted all along, he's now at one of the top clubs with a guaranteed starting spot, no matter how badly he plays or if Martial/Rashford are more deserving.

If he remained with us to this day he would likely be occupying the role Batshuayi is now, which would be appropriate to the level he is as a player so you can only really say well played to him for getting into such a privileged position and thank god it isn't us lumbered with him.

I think the problem with Lukaku is the same as was with Diego Costa. Strikers nowadays can't just depend on being a poacher, you have to have other skills, dribbling, passing, vision etc. Because the moment you stop scoring goals, it will just be so clear how useless you are to the team if you don't score goals, because you don't have anything else to show

Well IMO atleast Diego brought some passion and agression to this team.

It seems we really did dodge having another lack luster striker on our hands. For once the footballing Gods were on our side.

He would have been as disastrous as Torres. Ok he'd score more often but his all round play would be equally as horrific as the Spaniard. I struggle enough watching Bats and he only starts once a month, Rom would have got me sectioned,

Agreed. I was originally gutted we ended up with Morata but the guy has done more than enough for us to realise Lukaku would have been a disaster.

I tried to give him a chance this year, thinking his ability to impose himself in big matches till this point was down to the way Everton set up in big matches, but seems like he is the problem. He can't win headers against Otamendi and Azpilicueta who are two of the shortest CBs around. His hold up play is dreadful in general, workrate non-existent, and finishing inconsistent.

Ego of Ronaldo, talent of Bendtner. Lukaku's story.

4 out of Lukaku's 10 league goals have been winners.

Wrong! Only 2 of his league goals have been direct winners (1-0 wins vs Southampton and Bournemouth). 4 out of the 10 contributed to points (vs Saints, B'mouth, Stoke, West Brom). Remaining 6 have come in easy 4-0/4-1 wins.

Being almost universally slated on RedCafe. Has been a lot this season. Many already proclaiming him a bust and saying they'd gladly see the back of him in the summer if he carries on like this.

Bit harsh on him but they knew exactly the player they were getting. Needs great service or he's useless. When he gets good service (against shit teams) he'll score. Not a top level footballer, but a top level goal scorer. I think he'd have been great for the United of old where they had terrific wingers who can deliver amazing crosses.

Who knows, maybe if they spend another coup,e hundred million on top class wide players he'll kill it for them. Hopefully not since it's amazing to see José melting down again.

Not sure if Lukaku is capable of being a true elite striker, even as a poacher never mind an all rounder. He lacks intelligent in his game, doesn't seem to possess mental strength and for someone with a big physique, he sure doesn't use it to his advantage and bully defenders like Drogba, for instance. He doesn't make himself a nightmare to play against. He's turning 25 next year, needs to start making his mark at the highest level soon if he's ever going to be a great striker.

Think he'd benefit greatly from playing with a complimentary second striker. Like if they manage to sign their long term target Griezmann. Him being the lone striker at a huge club with all that pressure exposes his many flaws.

Romelu Lukaku wanted to join Chelsea before Manchester United transfer, claims Farhad Moshiri

Everton co-owner Farhad Moshiri claims Romelu Lukaku rejected a new deal to stay at Goodison Park last summer because he wanted to join Chelsea.

The Belgian was wanted by both Chelsea and Manchester United last summer and ended up moving to Old Trafford for £75million.

United captain Wayne Rooney moved to Goodison Park on a free in the week before Lukaku moved the other way and his arrival at Old Trafford was seen as a huge coup for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Chelsea responded by sealing a move for Alvaro Morata within a fortnight but Moshiri claims Lukaku wanted to move to Stamford Bridge and his mother had a role in the decision

‘With Romelu I wasted two summers trying to keep him. I spoke to him, his agent, his mother,’ said Moshiri.

‘We tried to offer him a better offer than Chelsea. He wanted to play for Chelsea though – at that time.

He was also critical of Paul Martin, the midfielder's agent.

‘The money that agents can get from players moving club is immense and nothing has to be disclosed. Bill (Kenwright) has been like a father to many players, but ultimately it’s the agents they rely on.

‘If I tell you what we offered him, you won’t believe it, and we offered him an even better deal.

‘His agent came to Finch Farm to sign the contract then Lukaku phones his mother and ‘there was a pilgrimage to Africa and some sort of voodoo that says he had to sign for Chelsea’. What can you do?

‘He’d gone to LA and wouldn’t go back, his brain had gone. Luis Suarez had to bite a few players to get his move.’

The most painful was Ross Barkley, Last year I said we had three stars: Stones, Barley and Romelu. Ross was the one, the local boy, we thought we wouldn't lose.

'When it got to the two years I met his agent and and said we need to extend the contract. He said 'You need to get Ronald Koeman' and we got Koeman. He then said Stones was his friend and he should be allowed to leave and he left.

'We got into the last year and again we didn't want him to go. Bill miraculously got an offer for £35m for a player who was injured and then he changed his mind. Sam (Allardyce) spoke to him and he didn't want to stay.'
