I think it has everything to do with two things. First being the baggage that comes with him, second being that he explicitly has stated several times that Atletico is the only team where he wants to play.

LWB is priority because we have 2 players who can play RWB (Azpi, Moses). We have no left-footed players who can play LWB other than Alonso, and don't tell me Kenedy. RWB is not that pressing because we can rotate there, even Rüdiger can possibly slot in if needed. Ideally we upgrade both, but the left side seriously needs numbers first.

No he wasn't. He had some outstanding games in the beginning, but Kante was much more consistent throughout the season putting in high quality performances.

I think the gross overreactions here have been from the people who think that comparisons to Torres is criticism. I'm pretty sure they are comparing the similarities between their demeanor, running, dribbling style and whatnot.. not that he is going to miss sitters day and night based on a 30 min cameo, that's just stupid. And people also seem to forget that Torres used to be a cracking player, being compared to prime or pre-prime Torres is not bad at all.

How do you know we'll have only 2 CM spots for the entire season? Are you sure that Conte will want to play with 2 midfielders all the time? Well, he might not have a choice if one of them is not available to play, but that's where the 5th CM would step in. If we're gonna insist on having 4, then the 4th one needs to be of adequate quality.

Okay, that's a valid opinion. But riddle me this: Would you think the same if he was a random Congolese player from Ligue 1, who had the same hype as Luke did a few years ago, then moved to a genuinely big team and hasn't produced a decent season since? Who hasn't broken through in that big team, who hasn't played over 20 games a season for 3 years due to serious injury problems and who has been criticized by different managers for attitude problems? I say stay away, we need an upgrade on Alonso, not a backup to a player who would ideally be backup to someone much better. Luke Shaw is not better and he will not play over Alonso if he came here, pointless. Also, going from Alex Sandro to Luke Shaw is like going from Messi to Andros Townsend, just so underwhelming. We need to aim higher, much higher, someone who can actually improve us.

Chelsea simply don't want to go through the process of enduring a few years of mediocrity from those players, because they would need significant game time to progress, which means we would risk sacrificing success and revenue as a consequence. And in the end there is no guarantee that they would turn out any better, so the danger of going down the Arsenal route always looms. Instead we send them out on loan with the hope that they turn into above average players who fit our system, it just happens so that nobody has progressed well enough to fit the system and the manager's needs at that period of time when they were in their "breakthrough age". And none of the players we have hyped over the years have achieved anything noteworthy, actually the majority of them have had underwhelming careers and it's not all down to Chelsea, in fact we offer them a great platform for exposure. Some of them could have become useful squad players, sure, but by that time they had been already sold and we bought ready-made players from other leagues. In short, we are willingly not patient in dealing with the period between a scrub evolving into a player who can contribute to success.

Sounds like a smart guy, especially that he recognizes that he needs to build the physical side. Also great to see that he's being tutored by Luiz, I imagine he can learn a great deal from him.
