Klaas-Jan Huntelaar netted a second-half equaliser to earn injury-hit Schalke a deserved share of the spoils against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea took an early lead through Cesc Fabregas' first goal for the club, as the Spaniard took Eden Hazard's clever back heel in his stride before finishing past an exposed Ralf Fahrmann. But the former Barcelona star was amongst a host of Blues players to miss crucial chances to kill off the game, allowing Huntelaar to rescue his side with a composed finish on the hour mark. Injury-hit Schalke, who have started their domestic season woefully - notably being dumped out of the DFB Pokal by third division Dynamo Dresden - defended manfully and showed considerable resolve to repel wave after wave of Chelsea pressure late on. Even the free-scoring Diego Costa, on as a substitute, failed to show the Blues the path to victory as they drop points for the first time in any competition this season. There were shades of last season's opening night loss to Basel in the way Schalke continued to grow as the game progressed, and Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced to make a number of saves from testing efforts as the German team sensed an unlikely win. This Schalke side, struck by injury problems and a bout of flu that has devastated their first-team squad, impressed for large periods of the game and the draw is by no means a flattering reflection of the evening's proceedings. The German side, who finished third behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund last season, were well beaten the last time they visited Stamford Bridge thanks to a Samuel Eto'o brace, but this performance was testament to the unity in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. It might have seemed a formality for Chelsea once Fabregas strolled in to swipe the hosts ahead, but when the Spaniard smashed over a shot from Branislav Ivanovic's clever cut-back ten minutes before half-time, there may have been one or two Blues supporters fearing that that sort of missed opportunity would come back to haunt José Mourinho's men. And when Didier Drogba, on his first appearance for Chelsea in the Champions League since his winning penalty in the Allianz Arena in May 2012, side-footed wide a glorious chance served to him on a plate by Hazard, it seemed the Schalke sucker-punch would become something of an inevitability. Huntelaar duly obliged, converting smartly past the wrong-footed Courtois after Fabregas had been robbed of possession in midfield by the impressive Max Meyer, who has already reportedly courted interest from the Blues. Mourinho turned to Loic Remy and Costa to dig his side out of a hole, but when Remy, with his first touch, saw his goalbound effort superbly turned off the line by Roman Neustädter, it became clear that this was simply not to be Chelsea's evening. There were further late chances spurned as Hazard produced a good smothering save from Fahrmann and John Terry had a header cleared off the line as the Blues pressed for a late winner. Hazard also blazed over a volley from twelve yards after he was picked out by a sumptuous Fabregas through-ball as the German side battled through to full-time. Thanks to a late Maribor equaliser against Sporting Lisbon elsewhere in Group G, this result will most likely only prove a minor set-back as the Blues now turn their attention to a potential title-defining trip to Manchester City - beaten late on in Munich by Bayern - on Sunday.

Totally agreed gents. He's been fantastic as an attacking full-back and been culpable time and time again in defence. But hey, José has clearly given him more licence to attack, and he is definitely going to contribute 10 goals this season from these advance positions. It's hard to get the balance right.

As much as I love Azpi, I see this season following the exact same route as last year. Like Cole, Azpi has started as our number 1 left-back, but I can see Luis getting his chances and taking them with aplomb.

Loew got the best of Schurrle by using him as an impact sub. After 60 minutes of having to chase shadows, the last thing the opposition want to see is a direct, pacey winger who is composed at finishing. I think José needs to continue along that route.

Name five better centre-backs in world football. He's over-rated (inasmuch as he isn't as good as people make him out to be), but he's still one of the finest defenders in the game.

When you take away the offensive/creative responsibilities he had on his shoulders last season, Rambo is given a little more freedom to roam and he looks a player again. For me, he changed the game yesterday, and gave us some impressive balance. He's always a willing runner and on the evidence of his last two performances he deserves to start. Whether that's in place of Schurrle, I don't know, but he looks like the player he was in 2012 again right now.

Must have been watching a different game to you lot as I thought he played really well. If you want him to play like he did in 12/13, then he needs the sort of freedom that made us a Europa League-winning and third-placed Premier League side. The same sort of freedom in the midfield that cost di Matteo his job. Under Mourinho Oscar has to be more functional, because his defensive work rate is ridiculous. Fabregas is as useful as a knitted condom when it comes to defending, and we all know Hazard isn't exactly a work horse when it comes to tracking back. Apart from when Oscar has Matic AND Ramires behind him, it's moreorless impossible for him to be the explosive attacking player we have seen glimpses of in the past. That being said, when Ramires came on, I though the two of them absolutely bossed the game.

His next appearance will be his 625th, whilst his next start will be his 600th. CLL.

It was his début. Every striker wants to score on his or her début. I don't know about you, but watching Torres, Ba and Eto'o, I got a bit fed up of watching strikers who became too scared to shoot and chose to pass every time. We have two strikers in Remy and Costa who have scored eight goals between them, from 17 shots, 11 of which have been on target. It's nice to have strikers who can find the net, so let's maybe rein in the criticism and enjoy a good thing while we have it. Some people are never satisfied. I, on the other hand, couldn't be happier. Nothing better than seeing a big name striker finding his feet straight away. It's like DrogbAnelKalou all over again!

I don't want anyone to go overboard on the criticism of the defence right now. This time last year there was discontent over the boring 1-0s and 2-1s we were scraping. Now we are pummelling teams 3-1, 4-2 and 6-3 and playing some glorious attacking football. It's going to take time for us to find the right balance between this gorgeous attacking style and the defensive resilience we are renown for. Don't panic, and trust José. It'll all come good.

A good win has just been turned into a fantastic win considering Liverpool have just lost.

I feel less worried about Costa being potentially injured as we now have Remy, but I still want him to not push himself when he isn't quite 100%.
