Not necessarily, both are grammatically correct (although you must say "They have been playing" because there is no such thing as "they've") but since the previous sentence is "The kids are" and not "were" it would suggest that "have been playing" is more fitting.

The fact that a team with such a shit defense is 6 points clear at the top speaks volumes about the level of the PL this season.

Must win game. Our main problem under Rafa has been that we are unable to keep the momentum from one game to another. We have 4 winnable games in 10 days, if we can find our form and win them all or at least get 10 points, we will have some breathing space in 3rd place.
